Star Sports rides high on advertising revenues amidst Covid-19

The Indian Premier League is known to be the richest league in the world, owned by the richest cricketing board in the world. The IPL on number of occasions has proved that it is immune to controversies, recession and bad economic conditions.

Initially this year it did take a hit because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but now with the kind of response it has gained from advertisers, the league can also be hailed as Covid-19 pandemic proof.

More than 100 brands will be riding on the biggest cricket brand, IPL in 2020. These brands will either be advertising as on-air advertisers with broadcaster Star India, BCCI Central Sponsorships, IPL Team Sponsorships, or as advertisers on IPL Live Streaming feed on Disney Hotstar.

IPL 2020 Central Sponsorship: A total of 6 brands including Dream11, Tata Motors, UNACADEMY, Cred, Paytm and CEAT have a central sponsorship contract with BCCI. 

IPL 2020 Team Sponsors: Despite of the pull-out of certain brands due to the shift in IPL dates and the Covid-19 pandemic, all the franchises on an average have around 9-12 sponsors each.

IPL 2020 On-Air Advertising: According to Star Sports, more than 80 advertisers have already registered for advertising. Brands like Byju’s, Amazon, Dream11 have signed as co-presenting partners of the league. Star is also expected to sign 30-35 more brands before the inaugural game of the tournament.

IPL 2020 Live Streaming: Disney Hotstar is the official DIGITAL streaming partner of the league. they have already signed 13-15 brands as a sponsor. This year Fantasy sports, gaming, Edutech brands and FMCG products till now have been the top categories which are investing in IPL2020.

India’s leading fantasy sports app, Dream11 has already invested 222Cr as the title sponsor of IPL for this season. Other than that, it has also signed up with Star India as co-Presenting sponsor for the broadcast and further has pledged to spend around 120-130Cr as presenting partner for the on-air component of IPL 2020.

Other fantasy and gaming apps like MyTeam11, MyCircle11, MPL, Adda52 promoted Poker Stars, Ludo King, Baazi games and Yuvraj Singh promoted Ballebaazi.com are also investing in IPL this year. 

FMCG brands like ITC Foods, GSK, Colgate, Mondolez, Procter & Gamble are also investing big on the IPL 2020 maybe due to the festive season ahead.

There is no shortfall of money in IPL this year too and the fans are eagerly waiting to see their teams play with no shortage of excitement and intent as well, be it a pandemic or lockdown.
