Google India announced results for its ‘Year In Search 2021’ and the craze for cricket in India has been proved inevitable as the Indian Premier League (IPL) and ICC T20 World Cup filled the top spots for the trending query overall in the year. The two marquee cricket competitions have defeated even the likes of Covid vaccine or CoWin portal, according to Google India’s ‘Year In Search 2021’.
IPL received attention from the Indian population as usual as Mahendra Singh Dhoni guided his side Chennai Super Kings to its fourth title this season. Virat Kohli, on the other hand, gave shocking news to the world, as he announced that he won’t continue to be the captain of the Royal Challengers Banglore further anymore. To confirm this, many IPL and Indian cricket enthusiasts must have checked on Google for the news.
After IPL, ICC T20 World Cup was quite shocking as well with Pakistan beating India in the first week itself. To add more to this, India crashed out of the tournament from the group stage, which could have generated chaos on the search engine.
The list was quite lengthy, apart from IPL, the top trending query list included CoWIN, Euro Cup, ICC T20 World Cup, Tokyo Olympics and Covid Vaccine.
In 2020, the top 10 most searched news events by Indians included Tokyo Olympics, Black Fungus, Afghanistan, Tropical cyclone Tauktae and Lockdown. Adding to it, IPL had topped the trending query list last year too. However, this year, people’s focus shifted to other sports as Euro Cup, Copa America, Wimbledon, Tokyo Paralympics and French Open were in this most searched sporting event as well.
Furthermore, Neeraj Chopra who created history at Tokyo Olympics by winning the gold medal was on the list as well along with the silver medallist PV Sindhu and bronze winner Bajrang Punia.
