Google has strengthened its sports marketing footprint by signing on as an official premier partner of the Indian Premier League 2026, using the scale of one of the world’s most-watched sporting properties to accelerate adoption of its AI-powered search AI mode experience.

The multi-year agreement represents a significant milestone in the convergence of artificial intelligence and live sport, as technology companies increasingly look to premium sports ecosystems to build familiarity, trust and daily usage of AI-driven products among mass audiences.

Search AI Mode, powered by Google’s Gemini models, is designed to enhance how fans discover and engage with cricket content by enabling conversational queries during live matches. The integration aims to deliver contextual match insights, player statistics, historical comparisons and real-time explanations, creating a richer second-screen experience that complements live viewing.

Devajit Saikia, Secretary of BCCI, said, “IPL has always been the heartbeat of Indian Cricket, and this collaboration with Google India to integrate AI Mode into Search will fundamentally transform the fan experience. We are thrilled to empower our millions of passionate fans with enriched and conversational insights, deepening their connection to the game they love.”

Shekar Khosla, VP Marketing at Google India, added, “IPL has always piqued the curiosity of fans everywhere, consistently dominating Google’s ‘Year in Search’ sports trends in India since 2020. Cricket fans are not just passive viewers but are active experts; they are looking for deeper insights and stories that help them celebrate their teams both on and off the pitch. With AI Mode in Search, we’re excited to help fans stay connected to the game’s pulse like never before, continuing our commitment to bringing the best of Google AI to the world’s biggest sporting moments.”

The partnership underscores the IPL’s continued strength as a commercial platform capable of delivering unmatched reach across television and digital environments. With millions of fans actively engaging across devices during live match windows, the tournament provides an ideal environment for technology platforms seeking to embed themselves into everyday user behaviour.

Google’s entry also reflects a broader shift in sponsorship dynamics, as artificial intelligence emerges as a major new category alongside fintech, automotive and consumer technology brands investing heavily in cricket. As AI platforms compete to demonstrate real-time capabilities at scale, live sports environments are becoming critical proving grounds for innovation-led engagement.

The collaboration is expected to leverage the scale of the JioStar broadcast and streaming ecosystem, ensuring strong visibility across live coverage, digital integrations and brand activations throughout the 2026 season.

The TATA IPL 2026 season is scheduled to begin on March 28, with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru set to face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the opening fixture at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

As competition intensifies in the global AI market, partnerships with premium sports properties such as the IPL are increasingly being viewed as strategic investments to accelerate consumer awareness, drive product adoption and build habitual engagement with emerging technologies.
