Sunrisers Hyderabad delivered one of the most commanding performances of IPL 2026, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders by 65 runs at Eden Gardens in a contest that began as a batting spectacle but ended as a lesson in game management under pressure.
On a surface built for strokeplay, Ajinkya Rahane, leading KKR in his 200th IPL appearance, opted to field first after winning the toss, backing his bowlers to control the scoring rate later in the innings. Sunrisers Hyderabad responded with immediate intent, as Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma unleashed an aggressive powerplay assault that set the tone for the evening.
The opening pair stitched together 82 runs in just 34 balls, dismantling lengths and forcing early field changes. Head’s dismissal offered Kolkata a brief opening, and the home side capitalised through Blessing Muzarabani, who struck twice in the same over to remove Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma, briefly shifting momentum. Anukul Roy followed up by dismissing Aniket Verma, reducing SRH to a vulnerable position after the early surge.
At that stage, the innings demanded consolidation, and Nitish Kumar Reddy alongside Heinrich Klaasen delivered exactly that. The pair constructed a crucial partnership, balancing risk and strike rotation to rebuild stability. Their 82-run stand off 53 balls became the second-highest fifth-wicket partnership for Sunrisers Hyderabad, ensuring the early momentum was not wasted. While KKR’s bowlers managed to control phases of the middle overs effectively, SRH still progressed to a formidable 226 for 8, a total that maintained pressure despite the relative slowdown after the powerplay burst.
Chasing 227 was always likely to test Kolkata’s temperament. The franchise had never successfully chased a 210-plus target in IPL history, and the required rate of over 11 runs per over demanded immediate aggression. Finn Allen provided that spark, smashing 25 runs in the opening over to energise the chase, but the momentum proved short-lived as Harsh Dubey dismissed the New Zealand opener in the following over, shifting pressure back onto the hosts.
KKR’s powerplay score of 74 for 3 became their highest against SRH in IPL history, reflecting the attacking approach they were forced to adopt. Angkrish Raghuvanshi continued his strong start to the season with a second consecutive half-century, striking fluently and bringing up the team’s fifty inside 20 balls. Yet wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, preventing Kolkata from building the sustained partnerships required for such a steep chase.
Rahane’s dismissal to Jaydev Unadkat and Cameron Green’s run-out added to the instability, while Rinku Singh’s arrival briefly kept the contest alive as the scoring rate remained within reach. However, Nitish Kumar Reddy’s disciplined spell proved decisive, removing two left-handers and breaking the backbone of the chase. Once Raghuvanshi was run out, KKR’s resistance faded quickly.
From a relatively stable 120 for 3 in the 11th over, Kolkata collapsed dramatically, losing their final seven wickets for just 41 runs. Sunil Narine provided brief entertainment with two sixes, but the late resistance did little to alter the result as SRH completed a comprehensive victory.
The result marked only Sunrisers Hyderabad’s fourth win against KKR in their last 14 meetings since 2020, and just their fourth victory in 12 matches at Eden Gardens, making the margin of victory particularly significant given the venue’s traditional advantage for Kolkata. For KKR, the defeat also confirmed their first instance since 2012 of losing their opening two matches in an IPL season, placing early pressure on their campaign.
Nitish Kumar Reddy was named Player of the Match for his all-round contribution, scoring a valuable 39 runs and delivering a decisive spell of 2 for 17 that shifted the balance firmly in SRH’s favour.
On a night that began with an explosive batting display from both teams, it was ultimately discipline with the ball and composure under pressure that separated the sides, as Sunrisers Hyderabad turned early momentum into one of the most convincing wins of the IPL 2026 season so far.
