In a high-octane match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) edged out Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 10 runs.

The Sunrisers’ innings was highlighted by two unique power-hitting performances. Abhishek Sharma (59) once again showcased his top hard-hitting performance, smashing a 15-ball half-century. His onslaught during the power play enabled SRH to reach 75/2 in the powerplay. Heinrich Klaasen (59) then took over, anchoring the middle phase with a valiant half-century. Nonetheless, the wheels came off in the closing overs; SRH fell from a comfortable position to 194/9, losing four wickets for relatively few runs in the final stretch, keeping them just shy of the vital 200-run line.

The chase began with promise, with youthful Ayush Mhatre scoring 30 off 13 balls and Matt Short contributing 34 off 30. At 104/3 in 9 overs, CSK were clearly the favourites. However, the middle order lacked the required “finishing” kick. Shivam Dube (21) attempted to keep the innings together, but his departure in the 17th over proved to be the turning point. CSK’s inability to reach the boundary in the 18th and 19th overs meant they required an impossible 15 from the last over to end at 184/8.

SRH’s bowlers took advantage of the pressure they created in the middle overs while defending 194 on a flat track. After CSK got off to a flying start, Nitish Kumar Reddy took Sanju Samson‘s important breakthrough and ended with 2/31. The standout with the ball, however, was Eshan Malinga, who finished with 3/29, repeatedly nailing yorkers when it counted the most. The match came down to the final over, where Praful Hinge had to defend 18 runs; he showed remarkable patience by removing Jamie Overton and giving only seven runs to secure the 10-run victory.

CSK’s bowlers deserve a lot of credit for getting the team back into the game following Abhishek’s early onslaught. Overton was the star, taking 3/37, including the huge wickets of Abhishek and Nitish Reddy. He was superbly helped by homegrown prodigy Anshul Kamboj, who annihilated the SRH bottom order to end on 3-22. Their combined efforts resulted in SRH scoring only 47 runs in the final seven overs, a statistical aberration at Uppal that set CSK’s batters a highly attainable target.

With this win, SRH have secured six points and are now fourth in the standings.

Scorecard:

Sunrisers Hyderabad: 194/9, Overs 20, Abhishek Sharma 59, Anshul Kamboj 3/22

Chennai Super Kings: 184/8, Overs 20, Matthew Short 34, Eshan Malinga 3/29
