Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) continued their march towards the IPL 2026 playoffs with a commanding 33-run victory over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a high-scoring Match 49 encounter at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday night.

On a surface tailor-made for attacking cricket, SRH once again showcased the fearless batting identity that has defined their campaign this season, piling up 235/4 before producing a disciplined bowling performance to hand Punjab Kings a third consecutive defeat.

The result further strengthened Hyderabad’s growing reputation as one of the most dangerous batting units in the tournament, while also extending their remarkable dominance over PBKS at home. SRH have now won nine successive IPL matches against Punjab Kings in Hyderabad, the longest winning streak by a team against an opponent at a single venue in IPL history.

Asked to bat first, the Sunrisers came out with immediate intent through Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, whose aggressive opening partnership once again dismantled opposition plans during the Powerplay. The pair raced to the third-fastest team fifty in SRH’s IPL history, reaching the landmark in just 3.2 overs as Punjab’s bowlers struggled to contain the relentless assault. Their attacking start laid the foundation for another massive total on a venue that has consistently rewarded aggressive batting throughout the season.

Punjab Kings briefly pulled themselves back into the contest through Lockie Ferguson and Yuzvendra Chahal, who removed Abhishek Sharma and Head. However, dropped chances and inconsistent execution in the field allowed Hyderabad to maintain control of the innings.

Ishan Kishan capitalised fully on the opportunities offered to him, counterattacking fluently against both spin and pace, while Heinrich Klaasen once again delivered under pressure with a composed and destructive finish in the latter stages of the innings. Nitish Kumar Reddy added crucial late runs as SRH finished with 17 sixes, their highest tally against Punjab Kings in an IPL innings.

The total of 235/4 also continued Hyderabad’s extraordinary record while batting first. SRH have now scored 220-plus totals on 10 occasions in IPL history and remain unbeaten in every one of those matches.

Punjab Kings entered the chase with confidence, having successfully chased targets in all five of their previous wins this season, but the pursuit quickly unravelled under scoreboard pressure.

Pat Cummins provided the breakthrough with the new ball before Nitish Kumar Reddy struck another early blow to reduce PBKS to 23/3 inside the Powerplay. The dismissals of Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh and captain Shreyas Iyer left Punjab chasing the game almost immediately.

Despite the collapse, Cooper Connolly produced one of the standout innings of IPL 2026 in a lone battle against Hyderabad’s bowling attack. The Australian youngster smashed an unbeaten 107, registering the highest individual score by a Punjab Kings batter against SRH in IPL history.

At 22 years and 257 days, Connolly also became the youngest overseas batter to score an IPL century. Marcus Stoinis briefly supported the fightback with an aggressive cameo, but the required rate continued to escalate against Hyderabad’s disciplined attack.

SRH’s bowlers maintained control throughout the chase, with Cummins and Sakib Hussain delivering key breakthroughs during the second half of the innings to prevent Punjab Kings from sustaining momentum.

Punjab eventually finished 33 runs short despite Connolly’s century, as Hyderabad completed another statement win in their playoff push.

The victory also reinforced another extraordinary statistic surrounding SRH’s batting dominance. Hyderabad have now defended 220-plus targets successfully in all 11 such matches in IPL history, underlining the sheer scoreboard pressure their batting line-up continues to create this season.

With their aggressive top order, experienced finishers and increasingly reliable bowling unit peaking at the right stage of the competition, Sunrisers Hyderabad are rapidly emerging as one of the strongest title contenders in IPL 2026.

Scorecard:

Sunrisers Hyderabad: 235-4 , Overs 20, Heinrich Klaasen 69, Yuzvendra Chahal 1/32

Punjab Kings: 202-7, Overs 20, Cooper Connolly 107*, Pat Cummins 2/34
