Rajasthan Royals continued their impressive start to the Indian Premier League 2026 season with a six-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Match 16.

RR chased down a formidable target of 202 with two overs to spare in a contest shaped by powerplay dominance and measured finishing.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru, after being put in to bat, endured an early setback as Jofra Archer struck with the first ball of the match to dismiss Phil Salt for a duck. The early pressure intensified when Archer removed Devdutt Padikkal soon after, while Ravi Bishnoi accounted for Virat Kohli inside the powerplay to leave RCB three down within the first six overs.

The middle phase further tilted in Rajasthan’s favour as Krunal Pandya became the fourth wicket to fall, followed by Jitesh Sharma and Tim David.

With wickets falling around him, Rajat Patidar ensured the innings did not lose momentum entirely, bringing up a crucial half-century to revive RCB’s hopes of posting a competitive total. The late introduction of Impact Substitute Venkatesh Iyer highlighted the precarious situation RCB found themselves in, but Iyer provided a valuable late contribution, scoring 21 runs in the final over off Sandeep Sharma to push the total to 201 for 8.

The innings carried multiple milestones, with Patidar becoming the fourth fastest Indian to reach 3000 T20 runs, achieving the landmark in 95 innings. Sandeep Sharma also reached 150 IPL wickets among pacers. RCB’s 201 for 8 equalled the record for the joint most 200-plus totals in IPL history with 37 and marked the highest total by a side that had been six down for under 100 in an IPL innings.

Rajasthan Royals’ response was defined by an extraordinary powerplay assault led by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old produced one of the most remarkable innings of the season, racing to 78 from just 26 deliveries at a strike rate of 300. Sooryavanshi’s fearless strokeplay immediately shifted the balance of the contest, as he struck boundaries consistently against both pace and spin to disrupt RCB’s plans.

Sooryavanshi continued to dictate the tempo, reaching a half-century in just 15 balls, the fifth fastest by an Indian in IPL history. Rajasthan closed the powerplay at 97 for 1, one of the highest powerplay totals recorded in the league.

RCB briefly attempted a comeback through Krunal Pandya, who removed Sooryavanshi and Shimron Hetmyer in successive deliveries, while Josh Hazlewood dismissed Riyan Parag to reduce Rajasthan to four wickets down. However, the early acceleration ensured the required rate remained manageable.

Dhruv Jurel then anchored the chase with a composed unbeaten 81 from 43 deliveries, balancing controlled aggression with smart strike rotation to guide Rajasthan home in 18 overs. His 100-run partnership with Sooryavanshi, which came off just 37 balls, proved decisive in maintaining scoreboard pressure and denying RCB any sustained opportunity to recover.

The result marked Rajasthan Royals’ fifth successful chase of a 200-plus target in IPL history and the third time the franchise has begun a season with four or more consecutive victories. For Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the defeat represented their seventh instance of failing to defend a total in excess of 200 in the IPL.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was named Player of the Match for an innings that set the tone for the chase and underlined the growing impact of young Indian batters in the tournament.

The victory keeps Rajasthan Royals firmly among the early frontrunners in IPL 2026, with their combination of aggressive intent and structural batting depth continuing to deliver consistent results. Just two teams now remain unbeaten this season, Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru were left to reflect on a match where a competitive total was ultimately overshadowed by the extraordinary impact of a fearless teenage innings at the top of the order.

Scorecard:

Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 201-8, Overs 20, Rajat Patidar 63, Ravi Bishnoi 2/32

Rajasthan Royals: 202-4, Overs 18, Dhruv Jurel 81*, Krunal Pandya 2/30
