Delhi Capitals began their IPL 2026 campaign with an impressive display of resilience, overcoming an early collapse to defeat Lucknow Super Giants by six wickets in Match 5 of the Indian Premier League at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium.
Chasing 142 on a surface that demanded patience, Delhi reached 145/4 in 17.1 overs, anchored by a mature, unbeaten 70 from Impact Player Sameer Rizvi.
In a contest shaped by early breakthroughs and middle-overs control, Delhi demonstrated the value of squad depth and tactical flexibility, recovering from 33/4 inside the powerplay to script one of the most composed chases of the young season.
After opting to bowl first, Delhi Capitals executed their plans with precision on a pitch that offered assistance to seamers early before gradually easing for batting. Lucknow struggled to establish a rhythm as regular wickets prevented the home side from building meaningful partnerships.
LSG experimented with a revised batting structure, promoting Rishabh Pant to open alongside Mitchell Marsh. The move, however, delivered an early setback as Pant’s first outing as an opener for the franchise ended in a run-out at the bowler’s end, immediately placing pressure on the middle order.
With Aiden Markram, Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran unable to convert starts, Marsh’s 35 provided the only stability in the top order. Abdul Samad contributed 36 in the middle overs, but the innings never gained sustained momentum as Delhi’s bowlers maintained control of the scoring rate.
Mukesh Kumar set the tone with a disciplined new-ball spell, while Lungi Ngidi and T Natarajan claimed three wickets each to restrict Lucknow to 141 in 18.4 overs. The spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel further applied pressure through the middle phase, ensuring the hosts never accelerated significantly.

Delhi’s chase began dramatically as Mohammed Shami struck with the first ball of the innings on debut for Lucknow, dismissing KL Rahul for a golden duck. Rizvi’s unbeaten 70 not only secured victory with 17 balls remaining but also highlighted the growing influence of impact substitutes in shaping match outcomes.
Lucknow’s use of Shahbaz Ahmed as an Impact Player left the side short of a reliable fifth bowling option, placing added pressure on part-time overs from Markram. The absence of a specialist option allowed Delhi to accelerate decisively, with 29 runs coming across two overs that effectively sealed the result.
Despite the defeat, Lucknow found positives in the new-ball spells of Shami, Mohsin Khan and Prince Yadav, who demonstrated strong control in the powerplay. Samad’s contribution with the bat also offered encouragement in an otherwise challenging outing for the hosts.
The victory extends Delhi Capitals’ strong recent record against Lucknow, marking their fifth consecutive win against the franchise between 2024 and 2026. More importantly, the result provides early momentum in a season where middle-order stability and bowling flexibility are expected to define success.
For Lucknow Super Giants, the match raises questions around batting order combinations despite a top three of Marsh, Markram and Pooran that performed consistently last season.
