Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT) will meet in a blockbuster Qualifier 1 clash of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala tonight, with a place in the final at stake and two of the league’s modern powerhouses set to collide for the first time in the playoffs.

The match brings together the top two sides from the league stage, with RCB narrowly finishing above Titans on net run rate after both teams secured 18 points from 14 matches. For RCB, the encounter represents another step in their attempt to establish a new era of dominance after finally lifting their maiden IPL title in 2025. Gujarat Titans, meanwhile, are chasing a return to the final under Shubman Gill after once again producing one of the most balanced campaigns of the season.

Head-to-Head:

Over the last five years, no two franchises have been more consistent than RCB and GT. The pair own the best win percentages in the competition during that period and have reached the playoffs in four of the last five seasons. Despite that sustained success, Dharamsala will surprisingly host their first-ever postseason meeting.

The rivalry itself has remained remarkably even. The two teams have split their eight previous IPL encounters 4-4, including both league-stage meetings this season, and every match between them has been won by the side batting second.

Much of the spotlight will inevitably fall on Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill, two generations of Indian batting excellence leading their teams into one of the biggest matches of the season. Kohli has once again been central to RCB’s campaign, although his playoff record remains an intriguing subplot heading into the contest. Across IPL playoff appearances, Kohli averages 26.40 with a strike rate of 121.10 and has registered only two half-centuries.

RCB could also face a key selection decision surrounding opener Phil Salt, who remains under observation after fitness concerns emerged ahead of the playoffs. Captain Rajat Patidar expressed optimism over Salt’s availability, but the franchise is understood to be considering Venkatesh Iyer as a possible opening alternative if required.

Interestingly, Iyer carries an impressive playoff record into the game, having produced a 50-plus score in each of his last four IPL knockout appearances.

RCB’s rise this season has been built on aggressive top-order batting and a bowling attack that has consistently delivered in pressure situations. Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have provided control and breakthroughs with the new ball, while Suyash Sharma and Krunal Pandya have strengthened the middle overs.

Bhuvneshwar, currently the Purple Cap holder, could hold the key against Gujarat’s top order. The veteran seamer has historically enjoyed strong matchups against GT’s leading batters, dismissing Jos Buttler nine times and Gill five times in T20 cricket. In the teams’ previous meeting this season, he removed Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Buttler in a decisive spell.

On the other side, Kagiso Rabada has spearheaded Gujarat Titans’ pace attack throughout the campaign and enters the playoffs as one of the league’s leading wicket-takers alongside Bhuvneshwar. The two quicks are separated only by economy rate at the top of the wicket-taking charts. Rabada also boasts a favourable record against Kohli, dismissing the RCB star five times in 16 IPL innings.

Gujarat Titans once again arrive in the playoffs with a well-rounded squad structure. Gill and Sai Sudharsan have formed one of the tournament’s most productive opening partnerships, while Buttler has supplied power and acceleration through the middle overs.

RCB won their only match at the venue during the day game this season, while batting first; the night games have heavily favoured chasing sides. Gujarat Titans, however, will enter unfamiliar territory, having never previously played an IPL fixture at the HPCA Stadium since joining the league in 2022.

The powerplay battle could ultimately decide the contest. GT have been among the best new-ball bowling sides in IPL 2026, taking 30 wickets in the first six overs at an average of 24.53 and an economy rate of 8.76. RCB are close behind with 28 wickets in the phase, although at a slightly higher economy rate of 9.50.

For RCB, negotiating Gujarat’s pace attack while preserving their aggressive scoring approach will be critical. Gujarat, meanwhile, will look to expose RCB’s middle order by removing Kohli early and allowing Rashid Khan to dictate the middle overs.

Beyond the immediate stakes of a place in the final, history also favours the winner of Qualifier 1. The team progressing directly from the fixture has gone on to lift the IPL trophy 12 times, including in each of the last eight seasons, underlining the enormous advantage attached to finishing in the top two.
