Punjab Kings produced a clinical run chase to defeat Chennai Super Kings by five wickets in Match 7 of the Indian Premier League 2026 season at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, continuing their recent dominance over the home side in Chennai.
Chennai’s innings began on an uncertain note when Sanju Samson fell early for seven in the second over, placing immediate pressure on the home side. However, the early setback was countered by a fearless innings from teenage batter Ayush Mhatre, who shifted momentum with aggressive strokeplay against both pace and spin.
The Under-19 World Cup-winning captain displayed composure beyond his years, reaching his half-century in just 29 balls. In doing so, Mhatre became the youngest player to score an IPL fifty at Chepauk and recorded his second 50-plus score in the tournament before turning 19. His 96-run partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad provided Chennai with a platform to recover from the early blow.
While Mhatre led the scoring rate, Gaikwad played a more restrained role, anchoring the innings as the surface demanded measured stroke selection. The Chennai captain scored at a controlled pace, managing only two boundaries, as Punjab’s bowlers maintained disciplined lines through the middle overs.
Yuzvendra Chahal provided the breakthrough by ending the promising stand, before Vijaykumar Vyshak further dented Chennai’s momentum by dismissing Mhatre for 73, the third-highest individual score in IPL history by a player before turning 19.
Punjab’s bowlers tightened control through the middle phase, with Marco Jansen removing Kartik Sharma as Chennai briefly struggled to accelerate. Sarfaraz Khan injected late momentum with a counterattacking 32 off 12 balls, shifting pressure back onto the visitors during the closing overs.
Punjab Kings were penalised for a slow over-rate, resulting in only four fielders being allowed outside the 30-yard circle in the final two overs. Shivam Dube capitalised on the fielding restriction, finishing unbeaten on 45 from 27 balls to push Chennai beyond the 200-run mark.
Despite posting a total in excess of 200, the milestone offered limited comfort historically. It marked the sixth instance of Chennai scoring 200 or more against Punjab in the IPL, with the home side having lost four of the previous five such matches, underlining the unpredictable nature of this rivalry.
Punjab’s chase began with immediate intent. Priyansh Arya, introduced as the Impact Player, set the tone with an explosive start alongside Prabhsimran Singh. The pair raced to 50 in just 3.2 overs, the fastest team fifty recorded against Chennai in IPL history and the joint quickest at Chepauk.
Arya’s 39 from just 11 balls dismantled Chennai’s new-ball plans before Matt Henry provided the breakthrough. Prabhsimran continued the aggressive approach and added 33 runs with Cooper Connolly before a mix-up in the middle resulted in Prabhsimran being run out for 43.
Connolly maintained the tempo with a fluent 33 before falling to Anshul Kamboj, but Punjab’s chase remained structured around a clear tactical approach, one batter stabilising the innings while the other applied sustained pressure on the scoring rate.
Shreyas Iyer ensured the chase never lost direction, playing an authoritative innings that combined calculated risk with controlled aggression. His 50 from 26 balls, highlighted by clean striking against both pace and spin, placed Punjab firmly in command of the contest. Iyer added a crucial 50-run partnership with Nehal Wadhera, effectively taking the game beyond Chennai’s reach.
Although Kamboj dismissed Iyer to briefly revive Chennai’s hopes, the equation had already tilted significantly in Punjab’s favour, with 24 runs required from 18 deliveries.
Matt Henry later removed Wadhera, but Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis calmly completed the chase, sealing Punjab’s second win of the season and handing Chennai consecutive defeats in the early phase of the campaign.
The result continues a growing trend in the fixture. This was the fifth occasion Chennai have lost to Punjab after scoring 200 or more, the most such defeats by a team against a single opponent in T20 cricket. Punjab also registered their fourth consecutive victory over Chennai at Chepauk, reinforcing their recent advantage in the matchup.
The successful chase marked one of the highest 200-plus run pursuits for Punjab in IPL history, further strengthening their record as one of the most effective chasing sides in T20 cricket, with nine successful chases of 200 or more.
Priyansh Arya was named Player of the Match for his game-changing innings at the top of the order, providing early momentum that shaped the direction of the chase.
For Chennai, the result highlights the need for greater control in defending totals, while Punjab depart Chennai with growing confidence in a batting unit capable of executing high-pressure chases with clarity and intent.
