In the 17th match of the IPL 2026, Punjab Kings (PBKS) chased down a difficult goal of 220 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium.
Despite the initial devastation, PBKS bowlers deserve praise for their perseverance. After getting smacked for 100+ runs in the first six overs, they were able to drastically reduce the deficit. Shashank Singh was a surprise hero with the ball, bowling a game-changing 2/20 session and removing both set openers in rapid succession. While Arshdeep Singh took two wickets, he was expensive (12.5 economy). However, the concerted effort to hold SRH under 250 proved to be the difference between victory and defeat.
Punjab’s chase was a showcase for aggressive, contemporary T20 cricket. They replied to the huge target by matching SRH’s aggressiveness early on, as both openers, Priyansh Arya (57) and Prabhsimran Singh (51) started hammering from ball one. The home side scored 93 in the powerplay, as both openers reached their fifties. They had a little hiccup after losing three wickets to Shivang Kumar. At 128/3 in the eleventh over, SRH thought they still had an opportunity to defend their score. But skipper Shreyas Iyer had other plans. Iyer (69*) was the stabilising factor, scoring 69 off 33 to keep the run pace under check. Their ability to hit 15 sixes as a team demonstrated a “no-fear” depth that finally destroyed the spirit of the SRH defence, allowing them to comfortably reach 223/4.
The Sunrisers’ innings consisted of two phases. They had one of the most explosive starts in IPL history, with Abhishek Sharma (74) and Travis Head annihilating the Punjab bowling lineup. Abhishek was in a league of his own, striking at 264.29, and the pair combined for 105 runs in the powerplay. However, momentum shifted as the openers departed; the middle order, which included Heinrich Klaasen (39) and Ishan Kishan (27), struggled to keep up the unprecedented pace. While they scored a solid 219/6, it felt a little lacklustre given that they were 120/0 after only 8 overs.
The SRH bowlers failed to contain a furious Punjab pursuit. While Shivang Kumar was the star, demonstrating remarkable calm to capture 3/33, the remainder of the onslaught proved costly. Harshal Patel and Jaydev Unadkat took the brunt of the attack, surrendering runs at economy rates of 19.5 and 13.33, respectively. The absence of breakthroughs in the middle overs allowed Punjab to form the partnerships required to reach the big goal with more than an over remaining.
With this win, PBKS successfully to preserve their lead in the points table.
