In the 69th match of the Indian Premier League 2026, Rajasthan Royals (RR) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 30 runs at the  Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Rajasthan Royals rebounded from a shaky start to compile an impressive 205/8, relying largely on middle-order consistency and explosive lower-order depth. After losing their devastating opening combination early on, along with skipper Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel (38) anchors the innings, which is kept going by Dasun Shanaka‘s (29) quickfire knock. The defining moment of their batting came at the end, when RR mercilessly weaponised the final 5 overs to score 73 runs. This late assault was led by a magnificent cameo from Jofra Archer (32), who smashed three sixes, maximising the genuine bounce of the Wankhede surface and pushing the score above the important 200-run barrier.

Mumbai Indians’ run chase was significantly hampered from the start owing to a disastrous top-order collapse that left them reeling at 38/4 in the powerplay. Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a four-ball duck by Archer, as his fellow top-order players failed to provide support. A valiant 63-run stand between Will Jacks (33) and Suryakumar Yadav (60) rekindled the match, and skipper Hardik Pandya‘s aggressive 34 added to the momentum. However, the batting crumbled under duress when it counted the most; after Pandya was removed in the 16th over, SKY was unable to radically alter gears and fell soon after, causing the tail to utterly collapse under the growing necessary run rate.

Defending 205, Rajasthan’s bowling team produced a masterpiece in high-pressure performance, limiting Mumbai to 175/9. Archer extended his batting momentum into his key talent, fracturing MI’s spine with a spectacular, match-winning spell of 3/17 in 4 overs. While Suryakumar and Jacks threatened to launch a dangerous middle-overs counter-attack, RR’s secondary bowlers held their nerve; Nandre Burger (2/43) delivered the critical breakthrough by removing a set Suryakumar for 60, while spin support from Brijesh Sharma (2/26) and timely strikes from Yash Punja halted any lower-order acceleration, resulting in a clinical 30-run victory.

MI’s strategy against RR’s explosive hitters worked well, with Deepak Chahar (2/43) and young spinner AM Ghazanfar (1/45) limiting the visitors and reducing them to 54/3. Shardul Thakur (2/41) made significant middle-overs breakthroughs to hold RR in check till the 14th over. However, the death bowling lacked discipline in the humid circumstances as MI totally lost their lines, surrendering 83 runs in the final six overs.

With this win, RR have qualified for the playoffs, thus eliminating chances for Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Scorecard:

Rajasthan Royals: 205/8, Overs 20, Dhruv Jurel 38, Shardul Thakur 2/41

Mumbai Indians: 179/9, Overs 20, Suryakumar Yadav 60, Jofra Archer 3/17
