In the thrilling IPL 2026 match no. 20, reigning champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) solidified their supremacy by defeating Mumbai Indians (MI) by 18 runs at the Wankhede Stadium.

After being put into bat first, RCB put forward an excellent example of modern T20 batting, which was offered by RCB’s top order. Openers Phil Salt (78) and Virat Kohli (50) destroyed the MI bowling attack with a 120-run stand in just over 10 overs after being asked to bat. The captain put significant pressure on MI with a quick fifty in just 17 balls. Although his strike rate wasn’t quite as high, Kohli also contributed with a fifty. Rajat Patidar (53) maintained the pace with a scorching cameo of an unbelievable fifty off only 20 balls, while Tim David‘s (34) undefeated knock further brought RCB to an intimidating total of 240/4.

Mumbai Indians’ top order buckled under pressure as they chased a huge 241. Stars like Suryakumar Yadav (33) and Hardik Pandya (40) got starts but failed to turn them into game-winning blows, and Rohit Sharma (19), after getting a brilliant start, was forced to depart due to injury. Sherfane Rutherford, who kept MI in the hunt with an incredible 71 off 31 balls, including nine massive sixes, was the highlight of the chase. The target was too lofty, and MI ended at 222/5 despite his spectacular late-inning performance against Romario Shepherd.

While defending an enormous score, RCB’s bowlers displayed excellent poise. The best performer was Krunal Pandya, who executed a brilliant spell of 1/26 in 4 overs to stifle the MI middle order. Despite being rather pricey, Suyash Sharma proved crucial by taking two important wickets, including the dangerous SKY. Despite Shepherd’s wobbly last over, Jacob Duffy maintained composure late in the game to remove Pandya, and the team’s combined efforts ensured RCB reduced MI to 18 runs short of the mark.

On a flat Wankhede surface, Mumbai’s bowling squad found it difficult to stop the run flow. Trent Boult and Shardul Thakur were costly, giving up 50 and 32 runs in their brief stints, respectively, while Jasprit Bumrah remained wicketless despite a well-controlled economy of 8.75. Salt struck Mitchell Santner for a hat-trick of sixes after he was able to take a wicket. Mayank Markande had the most costly spell, giving up 40 runs in only two overs, underscoring MI’s inability to make progress in the middle overs.

With this win, RCB are now third in the points table with six points from four games.

Scorecard:

Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 240/4, Overs 20, Phil Salt 78, Shardul Thaur 1/32

Mumbai Indians: 222/5, Overs 20, Sherfane Rutherford 71, Suyash Sharma 2/47
