Punjab Kings extended their unbeaten run in the Indian Premier League 2026 with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in Match 24 at the Wankhede Stadium, successfully chasing down a challenging target after a clinical all-round performance with both ball and bat.
Having won the toss and opted to field, Punjab Kings made an immediate impact through Arshdeep Singh, whose incisive spell in the Powerplay set the tone for the evening. The left-arm seamer struck twice in consecutive deliveries in the third over, removing Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav to leave Mumbai Indians under early pressure. In the process, Arshdeep also became only the fifth left-arm pacer to claim 100 or more wickets in IPL history, underlining his growing influence in the tournament.
Mumbai Indians, however, responded with resilience through Quinton de Kock and Naman Dhir, who steadied the innings with a composed 122-run partnership. The stand, the second-highest for MI against PBKS for any wicket, helped the hosts recover from the early setback and rebuild momentum through the middle overs. De Kock led the counterattack with a landmark innings, registering his third IPL century and becoming the first designated wicketkeeper to achieve the milestone. His knock now stands among the second-highest individual scores recorded for Mumbai Indians in the competition.
Just as Mumbai appeared poised to push beyond the 200-run mark, Punjab Kings regained control at the death. Shashank Singh provided the breakthrough by dismissing Dhir shortly after he reached his half-century, while Marco Jansen, Arshdeep Singh and Vijaykumar Vyshak executed their variations effectively in the closing overs. Mumbai Indians were restricted to just 35 runs in the final four overs, ultimately finishing with a total that felt competitive but slightly below par given the platform that had been built.
Punjab Kings approached the chase with intent from the outset. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh launched an aggressive start, taking 21 runs off the opening over from Deepak Chahar – the most Punjab have scored in the first over of an IPL innings. Although Allah Ghazanfar provided brief breakthroughs by dismissing Arya for 15 and Cooper Connolly for 17, Mumbai struggled to stem the flow of runs as Punjab Kings raced to 61 within the Powerplay.
The momentum firmly shifted in the visitors’ favour through a decisive partnership between Prabhsimran Singh and captain Shreyas Iyer. The pair combined for a 100-run stand, with both batters producing fluent half-centuries to take the game away from the hosts. Their 139-run partnership now ranks among the highest stands for Punjab Kings in IPL history and effectively sealed the outcome of the contest.
Punjab Kings’ chase also entered the record books, marking the second-highest successful target chased against Mumbai Indians in IPL history. The victory also represents Punjab’s sixth win over Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium, while drawing level for the joint-most wins against the five-time champions in the tournament overall.
Arshdeep Singh was named Player of the Match for his outstanding spell of three wickets for 22 runs, which laid the foundation for Punjab Kings’ success. His early breakthroughs ensured Mumbai Indians were unable to fully capitalise on their middle-overs recovery.
With the result, Punjab Kings maintain their unbeaten start to the IPL 2026 season, strengthening their position among the early frontrunners. For Mumbai Indians, the defeat marks a fourth consecutive loss, increasing the urgency to rediscover consistency as the tournament progresses.
