Gujarat Titans held their nerve in a dramatic final over to secure a one-run victory against Delhi Capitals in Match 14 of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

The result handed Gujarat their first win of the season, while Delhi suffered their first defeat after an encouraging start to the campaign.

After winning the toss and opting to field, Delhi Capitals made an early impact when Mukesh Kumar struck to remove Sai Sudharsan in the opening exchanges. However, the early breakthrough only set the stage for an explosive counterattack led by Jos Buttler.

Buttler dominated the powerplay with an aggressive display of strokeplay, racing to a rapid half-century and shifting the momentum firmly in Gujarat’s favour. His innings, highlighted by five sixes in the first six overs, marked one of the most destructive powerplay performances by a non-opener in the league. During this phase, Shubman Gill played a supporting role, facing just seven deliveries in the first six overs as Buttler dictated the tempo.

Kuldeep Yadav eventually provided Delhi with a crucial breakthrough, dismissing Buttler for 52 just as Gujarat threatened to take complete control of the innings.

Gill then anchored the middle overs alongside Washington Sundar, with the duo stitching together a 104-run partnership that rebuilt Gujarat’s innings and laid the foundation for a strong total. Both batters registered half-centuries, with Gill’s knock of 70 continuing his consistent run as one of Gujarat’s most reliable contributors. The partnership marked one of Gujarat Titans’ highest century stands for the third wicket or lower, underlining the team’s depth in the middle order.

Lungi Ngidi broke the stand in the 18th over, dismissing Gill and briefly slowing Gujarat’s momentum during the death overs. Despite a short boundary drought, Gujarat posted another 200-plus total, continuing their trend of producing big scores in the IPL, including multiple such totals in Delhi.

In response, Delhi Capitals began their chase with intent as Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul provided a strong platform. The opening pair added 63 runs in the powerplay, giving Delhi their first 50-plus opening partnership at home since 2024.

Prasidh Krishna ended the partnership by removing Nissanka for a well-compiled 41 off 24 deliveries, but Rahul continued to build momentum, bringing up a fluent half-century off just 29 balls.

The momentum of the chase shifted in the middle overs through Rashid Khan’s decisive spell. The leg-spinner removed Nitish Rana and Sameer Rizvi in quick succession, including a golden duck for Rizvi, applying pressure on Delhi’s middle order. Rashid later returned to dismiss Delhi captain Axar Patel, finishing with figures of three wickets for 17 runs in four overs, a spell that proved critical in shaping the contest.

Delhi’s challenge became steeper when David Miller was forced to retire hurt after sustaining a finger injury while fielding earlier in the match. With wickets falling regularly, the Capitals required 50 runs from the final 20 deliveries despite Rahul continuing to anchor the chase.

Mohammed Siraj delivered a decisive blow when he dismissed Rahul for 92, a knock that had kept Delhi within reach of the target.

With 36 runs needed from the final two overs, Miller returned to the crease and reignited the chase alongside Vipraj Nigam. The pair scored 23 runs from the penultimate over, reducing the equation to 13 runs required from the final six deliveries.

The final over produced high drama. Gujarat Titans were penalised for a slow over rate, resulting in an additional fielder being brought inside the 30-yard circle, increasing scoring opportunities for Delhi. Miller brought the equation down to two runs required from the final two deliveries, but declined a single on the penultimate ball in an attempt to finish the match himself.

The decision proved decisive. Miller failed to connect cleanly off the final delivery, and a quick single attempt was cut short by a direct hit from Jos Buttler behind the stumps, sealing a dramatic one-run victory for Gujarat Titans.

Rashid Khan was named Player of the Match for his match-defining spell in the middle overs, which halted Delhi’s progress at a crucial stage of the chase.

The result marked Delhi Capitals’ fourth defeat by a one-run margin in IPL history, the most by any team in the competition. For Gujarat Titans, the victory represents their narrowest win by runs and ends a sequence of close finishes that had previously gone against them this season.

All three of Gujarat’s matches this season have gone down to the final over, but this time they emerged on the right side of the result, registering a breakthrough win that could provide momentum heading into the next phase of the tournament.

Scorecard:

Gujarat Titans: 210-4, Overs 20, Shubman Gill 70, Mukesh Kumar 2/55

Delhi Capitals: 209/8, Overs 20, KL Rahul 92, Rashid Khan 3/17
