Rajasthan Royals (RR) produced a statement performance under playoff pressure to defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 47 runs in the Eliminator of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, securing their place in Qualifier 2 and ending SRH’s impressive campaign.
The victory keeps Rajasthan’s title ambitions alive and sets up a blockbuster Qualifier 2 clash against Gujarat Titans, with a place in the IPL 2026 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru now at stake.
At just 15 years old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi delivered one of the most extraordinary innings in IPL playoff history, smashing a breathtaking 97 off only 29 deliveries to completely dismantle Sunrisers Hyderabad’s bowling attack and propel Rajasthan to a commanding 243/8.
In a knockout game carrying enormous pressure, the teenager played with astonishing freedom.
Opening alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sooryavanshi launched an immediate assault on SRH’s pace attack, taking on Pat Cummins and the new-ball bowlers with fearless intent. Rajasthan surged beyond 100 runs inside eight overs as Hyderabad rapidly lost control of the contest.
Sooryavanshi’s innings included 12 sixes and came within touching distance of what would have been one of the fastest centuries in IPL history before he eventually fell for 97. In the process, he also surpassed Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for the most sixes hit in a single IPL season, underlining the scale of his breakout campaign.
While Sooryavanshi dominated the headlines, Rajasthan’s middle order ensured the momentum never dipped.
Jaiswal added 29 at the top before Dhruv Jurel injected further acceleration with a blistering 50 from just 20 balls. Rajasthan crossed the 200-run mark in the 15th over and maintained relentless scoreboard pressure despite losing a few wickets in the closing stages.
For Hyderabad, Praful Hinge emerged as the most successful bowler with three wickets, but SRH struggled throughout the innings to contain Rajasthan’s aggressive approach on a batting-friendly Mullanpur surface.
Chasing 244 in a knockout fixture demanded an explosive start, but Rajasthan immediately seized control through Jofra Archer.
The England fast bowler removed Abhishek Sharma early before dismissing Ishan Kishan just as the left-hander threatened to launch a counterattack. Archer’s pace, bounce and discipline during the powerplay proved decisive in disrupting Hyderabad’s chase, with the pacer finishing among the standout performers with the ball.
Nitish Kumar Reddy top-scored for SRH with 38, while Kishan contributed 33 and Salil Arora added a late 35. However, Hyderabad were never fully able to recover from the escalating required run rate as regular wickets derailed the chase.
SRH were eventually bowled out for 196 in 19.2 overs.
The result marked a disappointing conclusion to what had otherwise been a remarkable turnaround season for Sunrisers Hyderabad. After winning just one of their opening four matches, SRH had rebuilt their campaign impressively through the performances of Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan to emerge as one of the form sides entering the playoffs.
They also entered the Eliminator with a strong psychological advantage, having defeated Rajasthan Royals twice during the league stage and carrying a six-match winning streak against RR into the contest.
Instead, Rajasthan delivered arguably their most complete performance of the season at the perfect moment.
After enduring a difficult mid-season slump that threatened to derail their campaign, the Royals have now revived their championship push through back-to-back high-pressure victories, combining explosive batting with disciplined fast bowling in knockout cricket.
Qualifier 2 between Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans is scheduled to take place on Friday, with the winner advancing to the IPL 2026 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Scorecard:
