Match eight of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium was a lesson in middle-order calmness, with Delhi Capitals (DC) chasing down Mumbai Indians‘ (MI) total to win by six wickets.

DC won the toss and opted to bowl first. DC’s bowlers secured the victory by taking full advantage of the pitch’s slower pace. Mukesh Kumar was the star, finishing on 2/26 and accounting for the dangerous MI top order. Axar Patel was perhaps the most influential, limiting MI’s scoring rate with a stunning spell of 1/22 in 4 overs. The DC attack, led by Lungi Ngidi and T Natarajan, who each took a wicket, ensured that MI never had the explosive finish they are known for, limiting them to a score that was comfortably within reach.

After a difficult start that left them at 2/2, DC discovered a hero in 22-year-old Sameer Rizvi (90). Rizvi had the best innings of the competition thus far as his knock was a power-hitting masterclass, with seven fours and seven sixes. He was well assisted by Pathum Nissanka, whose solid 44 off 30 helped Rizvi take the lead. By the time Rizvi was removed, the rate required had dropped, and David Miller (21)* methodically guided the team home with about two overs remaining.

Mumbai’s innings was a series of fits and starts. Rohit Sharma (35) started well, momentarily seizing the Orange Cap, but the squad crumbled when Tilak Varma and Ryan Rickelton were dismissed cheaply by Mukesh Kumar. Suryakumar Yadav (51), the stand-in skipper, saved the day with a superb fifty in the middle overs. Despite his efforts and a late cameo from Naman Dhir (28), MI failed to find the “sixth gear” at the end, finishing with a competitive but subpar 162/6.

While defending 162 on a flattening Delhi surface, Deepak Chahar and Mitchell Santner took early wickets of KL Rahul and Nitish Rana. Jasprit Bumrah was his usual economical self, giving only 21 runs in four overs, but he lacked help on the other end. Shardul Thakur and Corbin Bosch were expensive during the Rizvi attack, giving 41 and 39 runs respectively. Finally, the absence of a middle-over breakthrough caused the game to slip away in the 16th overs.

With this win, DC now have four points from two games.

Scorecard:

Munbai Indians: 162/6, Overs 20, Suryakumar Yadav 51, Mukesh Kumar 2/26

Delhi Capitals: 164/4, Overs 18.1, Sameer Rizvi 90, Deepak Chahar 1/20
