In the 48th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by eight wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
CSK’s bowlers set the tone early on, taking full advantage of the pitch’s “sticky” features. The spin twins, Noor Ahmad (2/22) and Akeal Hosein (1/19), were responsible for Delhi’s middle-order collapse, constantly hitting the right lengths and limiting run movement. Gurjapneet Singh and Mukesh Choudhary gave superb assistance in the powerplay, limiting DC to 22 dot balls in the opening six overs.
The chase was a tactical masterpiece led by Sanju Samson (87*), who delivered one of the best knocks of the season. After Ruturaj Gaikwad and Urvil Patel were dismissed early, Samson seized complete charge, striking an undefeated knock which included six sixes. He found a good companion in Kartik Sharma (41), and together they constructed an unbroken 114-run innings. Samson was especially effective against the spinners, neutralising Kuldeep Yadav‘s danger and ensuring that the necessary run rate never increased. The pair’s ability to rotate strike and discover limits at will transformed a potentially difficult chase into a walk in the park.
On a sticky surface, Delhi’s innings never found its groove, finishing at 155/7, much below par. The top order toiled mightily against the moving ball, with KL Rahul (12) and Pathum Nissanka (19) failing to capitalise in the powerplay. DC were floundering at 69/5 and seemed like they would fold for less than 120. However, a tenacious 65-run combination between Tristan Stubbs (38) and impact sub Sameer Rizvi (40*) offered some late excitement. Ashutosh Sharma‘s fiery cameo (14) helped DC score 49 runs in the final three overs, giving their bowlers a tough target to defend.
The DC bowlers started well, but were unable to maintain the pressure required to defend a small total. Lungi Ngidi (1/30) made an early breakthrough, while Axar Patel (1/25) bowled with characteristic discipline to keep things close at first. However, the paucity of wickets in the middle overs was crucial.
With this win, CSK now have eight points and are sixth in the standings.
