Match 31 of IPL 2026 saw Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) produce a commanding performance to defeat Delhi Capitals (DC) by 47 runs, powered by a statement century from Abhishek Sharma and a clinical display with the bowling unit.
Delhi Capitals’ evening began with history even before the first ball was bowled. Axar Patel’s side won their eighth consecutive toss, equalling the joint third-longest streak in IPL history, and once again chose to chase. In contrast, the Sunrisers found themselves on the wrong side of the coin for the seventh consecutive time this season, becoming the first team in IPL history to bat first in each of their opening seven matches of a campaign.
If the toss suggested familiarity, what followed showcased dominance. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma laid the foundation with a 97-run opening partnership that immediately put Delhi under pressure. Head’s brisk 37 ensured early momentum, but it was Abhishek who transformed the innings from strong to overwhelming. The southpaw produced an innings of authority and range, bringing up his second IPL hundred while clearing the boundary ten times. It marked the second occasion he has struck 10 sixes in an IPL innings.
The century also elevated Abhishek into elite territory in the T20 format. It was his ninth T20 hundred, the joint most by an Indian batter alongside Virat Kohli, achieved in just 184 innings, the third quickest to the milestone. He also crossed 350 sixes in T20 cricket, further reinforcing his reputation as one of the most aggressive top-order players in the format.
While Abhishek commanded attention, Heinrich Klaasen quietly reached a significant milestone of his own, becoming the third fastest player in IPL history to reach 100 sixes in terms of innings. The South African’s presence ensured the scoring tempo never dipped as Hyderabad surged past the 240 mark, registering one of the highest totals of IPL 2026.
Chasing 243, Delhi Capitals never quite found rhythm. Pathum Nissanka fell early to Dilshan Madushanka, who claimed his maiden IPL wicket, setting the tone for a difficult pursuit. KL Rahul and Nitish Rana attempted to stabilise the innings with a half-century stand, briefly hinting at a recovery, but their dismissals in quick succession shifted the balance decisively back in Hyderabad’s favour. When David Miller followed soon after, the required rate had climbed beyond reach.
The middle overs proved decisive, with Eshan Malinga delivering a spell that effectively sealed the result. His variations and control disrupted Delhi’s scoring flow, while Sakib Hussain complemented him impressively. The pair combined for figures of 8-0-61-5, mixing pace cleverly and even generating reverse swing as the pressure intensified. It was a spell that highlighted Hyderabad’s growing bowling depth, particularly in defending large totals.
Despite resistance from Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs, the visitors never managed to build sustained momentum, with the asking rate continuing to rise beyond manageable limits.
For Hyderabad, the victory marked a third consecutive win, strengthening their position as one of the form teams in the competition. Abhishek Sharma’s performance earned him his seventh Player of the Match award in 81 IPL appearances, the most by an Indian player for the franchise, underlining his growing influence within the side.
On a surface built for strokeplay, SRH delivered the complete performance – explosive at the top, relentless in the middle, and composed with the ball. As the tournament approaches its midpoint, Hyderabad appear to be building more than just results. They are building momentum, identity, and belief.
