Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) delivered a commanding performance at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, securing an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 6th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Having won the toss, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane elected to field first, a decision that proved fruitful as their bowlers effectively stifled Rajasthan Royals’ batting lineup. KKR were forced to make a notable change to their lineup, with Moeen Ali replacing an unwell Sunil Narine. For the Royals, Wanindu Hasaranga came into the side, with Fazalhaq Farooqi missing out. Interestingly, the last instance of Narine missing a KKR game was against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Chennai during the first leg of IPL 2021.
The Royals’ innings began with promise as Yashasvi Jaiswal (29) and Sanju Samson (13) displayed aggressive intent. However, their momentum was halted when Samson was bowled by Vaibhav Arora, triggering a collapse. RR quickly slumped from a relatively comfortable 67/1 to a precarious 82/5. This prompted the introduction of their impact substitute, Shubham Dubey, but he failed to make a significant impact. Dhruv Jurel (33) provided some resistance in the middle order, and a late cameo from Jofra Archer (16), which included some powerful hits, helped RR limp to a total of 151. A key moment in RR’s innings was the dismissal of Riyan Parag (25), and their tactical move to promote Hasaranga to counter the spinners did not yield the desired results. Rahane utilized just five bowlers, all of whom contributed with wickets. Varun Chakaravarthy was particularly impressive, registering economical figures of two wickets for a mere 17 runs, playing a crucial role in restricting RR to a chaseable total.
In reply, the Knight Riders executed a well-paced chase. Quinton de Kock (97*) anchored the innings brilliantly. Moeen contributed briefly before being run out after the powerplay. While Rajasthan’s spinners managed to slow the scoring rate temporarily, KKR navigated this phase effectively. Despite losing a couple of partners around him, Kock remained unflappable, guiding his new franchise to victory. He strategically attacked the spinners when necessary and ultimately finished the game off against Archer, showcasing his class and experience. Angkrish Raghuvanshi provided solid support at the other end with an unbeaten 22.
This victory marks Kolkata Knight Riders’ first points of the IPL 2025 season. The Player of the Match award was deservingly bestowed upon Quinton de Kock for his magnificent unbeaten knock of 97 runs off just 61 deliveries, an innings punctuated by eight boundaries and six towering sixes. His stellar performance ensured a comfortable win for the Knight Riders, setting a positive tone for their campaign.
