PBKS won the toss and decided to field first. After a more than two-hour rain delay, the Ahmedabad fans eventually got their much-anticipated action. Punjab started well, dismissing Rohit Sharma cheaply to establish the tone. Azmatullah Omarzai was the most expensive bowler of the night, despite taking two wickets. Kyle Jamieson, Marcus Stoinis, Vijaykumar Vyshak, and Yuzvendra Chahal all claimed one wicket. While MI scored runs in areas, PBKS battled back in the final overs to limit them to 203/6, which was likely 15 runs short.
In the chase, Prabhsimran Singh fell early, but Priyansh Arya (20) got PBKS off to a strong start with a couple well-timed boundaries. Josh Inglis (38) then took command, extending his purple patch with a smooth hit that contained five fours and two sixes. His powerful 20-run assault on Jasprit Bumrah in a single over swung the tide decisively in PBKS’ favour and instilled confidence in the chase. But skipper Shreyas Iyer stole the show. Iyer batted calmly but ruthlessly, scoring 87* off 47 balls, including five fours and eight huge sixes. His shot of the day, a subtle boundary off Bumrah’s perfect yorker, exemplified his incredible form. The pivotal moment came in the 19th over, when Iyer unleashed a barrage of sixes on Ashwani Kumar, sending a clear message: PBKS aren’t just in the final; they’re going for the title.
Rohit Sharma enjoyed an early run of luck for MI but was unable to capitalise, resulting in another easy fall. Jonny Bairstow (38) gave some early momentum with a flurry of boundaries in the powerplay. Tilak Varma (44) was promoted to No. 3 and played calmly, assisting MI in laying a solid foundation along with Bairstow. Following Bairstow’s departure, the in-form Suryakumar Yadav (44) joined Varma, and the duo contributed a critical 72-run stand to maintain the momentum. However, both batters were removed quickly, temporarily stalling MI’s case. Naman Dhir (37) made an important cameo in the final overs, powering Mumbai beyond 200 runs with a number of late boundaries.
With the ball for MI, Ashwani Kumar got two wickets, while one wicket each taken by Trent Boult and Hardik Pandya.
Shreyas Iyer was adjudged Player of the Match for his scintillating batting show. With this win, PBKS will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the finals of the IPL 2025.
