IPL 2025 PBKS vs CSK: Dhoni’s late heroics not enough as PBKS clinch first win at home

With this win, PBKS stand fourth in the points tally with six points.

In the 22nd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 18 runs at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Chandigarh.

PBKS won the toss and opted to bat first. It was Priyansh Arya’s (103) show in Chandigarh, as he smashed his maiden IPL century. Arya was on fire, sending the bowlers all over the place, with just Ravindra Jadeja escaping his fury. Along with Arya, Shashank Singh (52) delivered a blistering half-century with a strike rate of 144.44. The pair forged a devastating 71-run partnership for the sixth wicket, wreaking havoc in the middle overs. As the innings came to a close, Marco Jansen (34) kept the pace going with several big knocks, guiding PBKS to an impressive 219/6. It was a spectacular, high-octane effort that paved the way for an intriguing game.

In the chase, Rachin Ravindra (36) and Devon Conway (69) laid a solid platform, but the required run rate kept rising. Conway, who appeared in good shape, reached fifty, but he had to retire hurt, making room for the dependable Jadeja. Despite the change, the chase did not gather any traction. Shivam Dube (42) found some rhythm, clearing the ropes a couple of times, but Mahendra Singh Dhoni (27) had a blast from the past. The renowned wicketkeeper-batsman wowed the crowd with a spectacular cameo, hitting three sixes and a four at a scorching strike rate of 225. Dhoni’s effort, full of nostalgia and brilliance, nearly propelled the team to victory, but he was removed in the final over. Despite his heroics, the away team fell short in the end, leaving PBKS with the victory.

While defending, Lockie Ferguson grabbed two wickets, while one wicket each was taken by Yash Thakur and Glenn Maxwell.

For CSK with the ball, Khaleel Ahmed and Ravichandran Ashwin obtained two wickets each. With them, Mukesh Choudhary and Noor Ahmad picked up one wicket each.

Arya was adjudged Player of the Match for his electrifying batting performance. With this win, PBKS stand fourth in the points tally with six points.
