IPL 2025 MI vs SRH: Will Jacks shines as MI defeat SRH

For his impactful all-round performance, Will Jacks was deservedly bestowed with the Player of the Match award.

The iconic Wankhede Stadium witnessed a captivating Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter tonight as Mumbai Indians (MI) showcased resilience and tactical prowess to secure a hard-fought four-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 33rd match of the 2025 season.

Opting to field after winning the toss, the Mumbai Indians’ bowling unit executed their plans meticulously, effectively neutralising the typically explosive opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. Despite an early reprieve for Abhishek, who was dropped at slip off Deepak Chahar, MI’s bowlers maintained disciplined lines and lengths. While Abhishek briefly threatened with three consecutive boundaries off Chahar, the opening partnership was restricted to 50 runs before MI captain Hardik Pandya drew first blood, dismissing the aggressive Abhishek for a well-made 40 off 28 deliveries.

Will Jacks further tightened the screws on the SRH innings, claiming two crucial wickets in quick succession, removing both Ishan Kishan and the dangerous Head. Despite struggling for his usual fluency, Head achieved a significant personal milestone, becoming the second-fastest player in IPL history to reach 1000 runs in terms of deliveries, achieving the feat in just 575 balls.

The Mumbai Indians’ bowlers continued to exert pressure through the middle overs, stifling SRH’s scoring rate. However, the visitors staged a late counter-attack in the final three overs, plundering 21 runs in the 18th and another 22 in the 20th. This late surge propelled SRH to a respectable total of 162/5, with valuable contributions from Heinrich Klaasen (37 off 28), a quickfire Aniket Verma (18* off 8), and captain Pat Cummins (8* off 4).

Jacks emerged as the standout bowler for MI, delivering an exceptionally economical spell of two wickets for a mere 14 runs in his three overs. He received commendable support from the experienced trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Pandya, and Trent Boult, who each chipped in with a crucial wicket.

Chasing 163 for victory, MI commenced their innings with aggressive intent. Rohit Sharma looked in imperious touch, racing to a brisk 26 off just 16 deliveries before falling to the SRH captain, Cummins. Ryan Rickelton continued the momentum, ensuring MI maintained a healthy scoring rate.

The turning point of the chase arrived in the form of a pivotal 50-run partnership between Suryakumar Yadav and Jacks in the crucial middle overs. This assertive stand effectively wrested control of the game from Sunrisers Hyderabad, who struggled to contain the scoring during this period.

Cummins, not one to give up, provided SRH with a glimmer of hope by dismissing both SKY and Jacks in quick succession, injecting tension into the chase. However, Pandya extinguished any hopes of an SRH comeback with a blistering cameo of 21 runs off just nine balls, bringing the home team to the cusp of victory.

With just one run needed, what seemed like a formality turned into a mini-drama. Ishan Malinga bowled a tight over, conceding only one run and, incredibly, picking up two wickets, delaying the home crowd’s celebrations. However, the inevitable arrived in the following over when Tilak Varma calmly struck a boundary, securing a crucial two points for the home team.

For his impactful all-round performance, Will Jacks was deservedly bestowed with the Player of the Match award. His economical bowling display and his crucial 36 runs off 23 balls (including three boundaries and two towering sixes) proved instrumental in Mumbai Indians’ hard-fought triumph. This victory will undoubtedly provide a significant boost to MI’s confidence as they aim to build on this momentum in the remaining fixtures of the tournament.

Scorecard:

Sunrisers Hyderabad: 162/5, Overs 20, Abhishek Sharma 40, Will Jacks 2/14

Mumbai Indians: 166/6, Overs 18.1, Will Jacks 36, Pat Cummins 3/26
