The Wankhede Stadium, a fortress for Mumbai Indians (MI), will play host to a crucial encounter tonight as the five-time champions look to arrest their slide against a buoyant Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 12th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. MI enter their home ground desperately seeking a turnaround after suffering consecutive defeats in their opening two matches. Their campaign has been riddled with concerns, starting with perplexing team selections. The decision to omit Vignesh Puthur from the XI for their second game in Ahmedabad raised eyebrows, especially considering his impactful three-wicket haul against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the season opener, providing a much-needed spark.
Adding to their woes is the underwhelming performance of their premier new-ball bowlers, Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar. Boult has a favourable record against Ajinkya Rahane, dismissing him three times in six IPL innings, and against Quinton de Kock, dismissing him six times in nine T20s. He has also dismissed Narine four times in four T20 encounters. Chahar, while being expensive against Narine (conceding at 209.09), has also dismissed both de Kock and Rahane four times each in T20s and IPL respectively.
Intriguingly, the Wankhede is also a familiar hunting ground for KKR’s captain, Rahane.
