Mumbai Indians (MI) emphatically secured the final playoff spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, delivering a resounding 59-run defeat to Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 63rd match at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
The Capitals, led by stand-in skipper Faf Du Plessis in the absence of Axar Patel, won the toss and opted to bowl first on what proved to be a challenging, slow-paced Wankhede pitch.
Mumbai Indians’ innings faced early turbulence, losing key wickets cheaply. Rohit Sharma (5), Will Jacks (21), and Ryan Rickleton (25) all departed within the first seven overs, leaving MI in a precarious position. However, a vital 50-run partnership between the in-form Suryakumar Yadav and young talent Tilak Varma provided much-needed stability. Varma eventually fell for 27, followed by Hardik Pandya (3), seemingly leaving MI staring at a below-par total.
The tide dramatically turned in the final 21 balls. A spectacular onslaught from SKY (73* off 43 balls) and a blistering cameo from Naman Dhir (24* off 8 balls) saw MI plunder an astonishing 57 runs, propelling them to a formidable total of 180.
Chasing 181 for victory, DC mirrored MI’s early struggles, losing their top order cheaply. Du Plessis (6), KL Rahul (11), and Abishek Porel (6) were all dismissed inside the powerplay, effectively derailing their chase before it could even begin. The Capitals never truly recovered, as Mitchell Santner delivered a spin bowling masterclass.
Santner, expertly exploiting the favourable conditions, spun a web around the Delhi middle order after the new ball had done its initial damage. His exceptional figures of 3/11 were a testament to his precision and guile, marking the second-most economical four-over spell by an MI spinner in IPL history. The Capitals ultimately crumbled, failing to mount any significant challenge.
For his brilliant and unbeaten innings of 73 runs, which single-handedly propelled MI to an above-par total, Suryakumar Yadav was deservedly named the Player of the Match.
This comprehensive victory at the Wankhede ensures Mumbai Indians clinch the last remaining playoff spot, extending their campaign in IPL 2025. For Delhi Capitals, it’s a bitter and unprecedented end to their season. In a remarkable turn of events in IPL history, they failed to qualify for the playoffs despite winning each of their first four games of the season, a testament to the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket.
