The Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium was the stage for a captivating Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 showdown today, as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) overcame Gujarat Titans (GT) by six wickets in a nail-biting 26th match of the season.

Chasing a challenging target of 181, LSG held their composure to secure the win with just three balls to spare, bringing an end to GT’s impressive four-match winning streak.

Rishabh Pant won the toss and opted to field first. The home team made one alteration to their playing XI, with Himmat Singh stepping in for the unavailable Mitchell Marsh. Gujarat Titans also made a single change, introducing Washington Sundar in place of Kulwant Khejroliya.

Titans’ formidable opening pair, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, continued their rich vein of form, providing a blistering start to their innings. The duo exhibited excellent chemistry, registering their 12th 50-plus partnership in a mere 24 innings together in the IPL. They constructed a solid 120-run stand, with both batsmen reaching their respective half-centuries. LSG finally broke the partnership when Avesh Khan provided the breakthrough, dismissing Gill for 60. This was followed by a quick double strike from Ravi Bishnoi, which helped stem the flow of runs for GT.

Despite the initial onslaught, LSG’s bowlers demonstrated resilience in the latter stages of the innings, executing their plans effectively in the death overs. Fine spells from Avesh Khan (1/32), Shardul Thakur (2/34), and Ravi Bishnoi (2/36) restricted GT to a competitive but potentially under-par total of 180. Digvesh Rathi also contributed with a wicket (1/30).

In their chase, Lucknow Super Giants opened with Aiden Markram, alongside Pant. While Pant departed for 21, Markram found an explosive partner in Nicholas Pooran. The dynamic duo launched a counter-attack, forging a rapid 58-run partnership that threatened to take the game away from the visitors. Pooran reached his fourth half-century of the season in a blistering 23 balls, showcasing his destructive hitting ability.

However, Gujarat Titans fought back strongly in the middle overs, claiming crucial wickets in quick succession. They dismissed Markram, Pooran, and the experienced David Miller, applying pressure on the LSG middle order with some economical bowling spells.

Amidst the mounting tension, young Ayush Badoni displayed remarkable maturity and composure. He anchored the chase with a well-calculated innings of 28 not out off 20 balls, ensuring that LSG remained in contention. His calm presence under pressure ultimately guided Lucknow Super Giants to a thrilling victory with three balls remaining. The successful chase of 181 now stands as the second-highest successful T20 run-chase at this venue, highlighting the quality of the batting performance.

Aiden Markram was named the Man of the Match for his sensational innings at the top of the order. His explosive 58 off just 31 deliveries, which included nine boundaries and one towering six, provided the ideal platform for LSG’s chase.

This victory marks a significant achievement for Lucknow Super Giants, adding another crucial two points to their campaign. For Gujarat Titans, despite a strong start with the bat, they will be disappointed to see their winning streak come to an end. The match served as a thrilling reminder of the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket, with momentum swinging back and forth until the very last over.

Scorecard:

Gujarat Titans: 180-6, Overs 20, Shubman Gill 60, Shardul Thakur 2/34

Lucknow Super Giants: 186-4, Overs 19.3, Nicholas Pooran 61, Prasidh Krishna 2/26
