IPL 2025 KKR vs SRH: Match preview, head-to-head and streaming details

Both teams share an identical record, having secured a single victory and suffered two defeats in their opening fixtures.

The iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata is set to host a captivating clash tonight at 7:30 PM IST as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) square off against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 15th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. This encounter holds added significance as it’s a rematch of the thrilling IPL 2024 final.

However, the current season paints a contrasting picture for both finalists. Three matches into the 2025 campaign, KKR find themselves languishing at the bottom of the league table, while SRH are only marginally better positioned, sitting just two places above them on the eve of this crucial game. Both teams share an identical record, having secured a single victory and suffered two defeats in their opening fixtures.

For the defending champions, KKR, a significant concern has been the fragility of their batting lineup. A stark contrast to their successful 2024 season, where their opening partnership laid solid foundations with an impressive average of 43.9 and a blistering strike rate of 207, this year sees them averaging a mere 15.3 with a significantly reduced strike rate of 100. Furthermore, the middle order, comprising the retained quartet of Venkatesh Iyer, Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, and Ramandeep Singh, has also struggled, averaging just 17.22 with a strike rate of 117.3. Adding to their woes, a vulnerability to short-pitched bowling has emerged, with nine out of their twelve dismissals to fast bowlers being on deliveries pitched at or shorter than the 8 to 10-meter mark.

While SRH might not boast the most formidable spin attack on paper, their batting prowess against spin bowling is undeniable and could pose a challenge to KKR’s strategy. KKR’s potential reliance on spin to climb out of their current predicament, while seemingly logical, could backfire against the Pat Cummins-led side. Notably, KKR’s mystery spinner, Sunil Narine, has been wicketless in 14 of his 25 IPL appearances against SRH. Interestingly, SRH have been explosive in the powerplay, recording the highest scoring rate this season at 11.88, but this aggression has come at a cost, with them also losing the most wickets (seven) during this phase.

Conversely, SRH’s bowling attack, which struggled in the previous season with the worst average (37.54) and the second-worst economy rate (9.89), continues to be a concern in IPL 2025, currently holding the worst economy rate. This could offer a glimmer of hope for the struggling KKR batters to rediscover their form. On the other hand, KKR themselves have struggled in the powerplay with the bat, registering the second-lowest run rate (7.8), and also share the unwanted statistic of having the joint-worst powerplay bowling strike rate of 54.

Despite facing similar challenges, the two teams appear to be adopting contrasting approaches. Following their recent defeat, SRH captain Cummins asserted that they would stick to their aggressive batting plan. In contrast, KKR mentor Dwayne Bravo, speaking on the eve of the match, suggested a shift in strategy, emphasizing the need for their batters to move beyond mere aggression and adopt a more crafty approach. Tonight’s encounter will reveal which philosophy ultimately prevails.

Head-to-Head:

Historically, KKR hold a significant advantage over SRH, boasting a 19-9 win-loss record. Their dominance has been particularly evident in recent times, winning nine out of the eleven matches played between the two sides since 2020. In the IPL 2024 season, KKR swept all three encounters against SRH, including a league stage victory, the crucial first qualifier, and the grand final itself.
