Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) delivered a dominant performance at Eden Gardens, dismantling Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by a resounding 80 runs in the 15th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
This victory not only solidified KKR’s stronghold over SRH, marking their fifth consecutive win against them but also highlighted their formidable batting prowess and sharp bowling attack.
SRH, having won the toss and elected to field, witnessed KKR’s batting lineup recover from an early stumble. Despite losing openers early, with Pat Cummins dismissing Quinton de Kock for a paltry one run and Mohammed Shami removing Sunil Narine for seven, Ajinkya Rahane (38) and young Angkrish Raghuvanshi steadied the ship. Raghuvanshi’s maiden IPL fifty provided the crucial foundation for the innings.
Venkatesh Iyer (60) then unleashed a blistering assault, capitalizing on the platform laid by his teammates. He punished SRH bowlers, including Cummins, Harshal Patel, and Simarjeet Singh, propelling KKR to a formidable total of 200. Iyer’s explosive knock, marking his third consecutive fifty against SRH, was well supported by Rinku Singh‘s (32) late flourish. This innings added to KKR’s impressive record of scoring 200-plus totals, now boasting 11 since 2023, the most by any IPL team.
Chasing a daunting 201, SRH’s batting lineup crumbled under pressure. Impact substitute Vaibhav Arora spearheaded the Knight Riders bowling attack, alongside Harshit Rana, dismantling SRH’s top order with crucial wickets of Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan within the powerplay. The visitors never recovered from this early onslaught.
Kamindu Mendis (27), making his IPL debut, and Heinrich Klaasen (33) offered brief resistance, but their efforts were insufficient to challenge the imposing target. The Sunrisers’ innings eventually folded, succumbing to the relentless pressure applied by the KKR bowlers.
Vaibhav Arora was named Man of the Match for his outstanding spell of four overs, including a maiden, conceding just 29 runs and taking three crucial wickets. Varun Chakravarthy also claimed three wickets, while Andre Russell picked up two. Rana and Narine each took one wicket. Notably, Narine’s wicket marked his 200th T20 dismissal.
This victory further cements KKR’s reputation as a formidable force in the IPL, becoming the first team to achieve 20-plus wins against three different opponents. Conversely, SRH’s struggles continue, with this 80-run defeat marking their biggest margin of loss in the IPL. Their propensity to concede 200-plus totals, now at 13 since 2023, remains a significant concern.
