Captain Shreyas Iyer led from the front with a magnificent unbeaten knock as Punjab Kings (PBKS) delivered a stunning performance at the Narendra Modi Stadium, defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) by 11 runs in a breathtaking 5th match of the Indian Premier League 2025. Opting to field after winning the toss, the Titans were left chasing leather as PBKS posted a formidable total.
The Kings’ innings were ignited by a confident start from debutant Priyansh Arya (47). While Kagiso Rabada provided the initial breakthrough, dismissing Prabhsimran Singh, the arrival of Iyer at the crease decisively shifted the momentum.
Gujarat Titans found a brief respite in the middle overs thanks to a double strike from left-arm spinner Sai Kishore. He removed both Azmatullah Omarzai (16) and the experienced Glenn Maxwell in quick succession. Maxwell’s dismissal was particularly noteworthy, falling victim to a missed review that replays showed would have saved him, adding another duck to his IPL record – his 19th.
Iyer’s unbeaten 97 was the cornerstone of Punjab Kings’ imposing total of 243/5. It was a captain’s innings of the highest calibre, marking the third-highest score by a captain on debut for a franchise. Iyer’s knock was characterized by his ability to consistently find the boundary, smashing a remarkable nine sixes. Valuable cameos from Marcus Stoinis (20) and a late flourish from Shashank Singh (44) propelled the visitors to their second-highest-ever IPL total. For the Titans, Sai Kishore was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets, while Rashid Khan took one, also reaching a milestone of 150 IPL wickets in just 122 innings – the third-fastest to achieve this feat.
Chasing a daunting 245 for victory, GT began with aggressive intent. Openers Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill attacked Punjab Kings’ bowling from the outset. While Gill fell relatively early, Sai Sudharsan continued the onslaught, finding boundaries and sixes with ease. The powerplay yielded a staggering 61 runs, providing a solid foundation for the chase.
The momentum continued after the powerplay, with GT batsmen maintaining a healthy scoring rate. A formidable partnership blossomed between Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler, threatening to take the game away from PBKS. The duo capitalized on the batting-friendly conditions, finding the boundary with regularity and bringing up GT’s hundred in the 10th over.
However, when GT appeared to be cruising, Punjab Kings found a crucial breakthrough, dismissing Sai Sudharsan after a brilliant 74. This proved to be a turning point in the innings. Despite a spirited effort from Sherfane Rutherford (46 off 28), the required run rate ultimately proved too steep to conquer. Punjab Kings’ bowlers, particularly impact substitute Vijaykumar Vyshak, bowled with exceptional discipline, stemming the flow of runs and building pressure. Vyshak’s economical spell, despite not taking a wicket, was instrumental in stifling GT’s chase after a period of expensive overs.
The inability of GT batters to rotate the strike effectively and adapt to PBKS bowling tactics in the middle overs ultimately cost them the game. While their power-hitting was commendable, their lack of versatility in shot selection allowed PBKS to regain control.
This loss will be a tough one to swallow for Gujarat Titans, especially considering the strong platform they had established. Their final total of 232/5 is their highest ever in a run chase and their second-highest overall in the IPL, underscoring the quality of their batting performance.
For Punjab Kings, this victory will serve as a significant confidence booster. Despite conceding a massive total, their bowlers demonstrated resilience and tactical astuteness to pull things back. Vyshak’s impact in the middle overs was particularly noteworthy, highlighting the value of timely bowling changes and disciplined execution.
Shreyas Iyer was deservedly named the Player of the Match for his magnificent unbeaten 97, a true captain’s innings that set up a memorable victory for Punjab Kings.
