IPL 2025 CSK vs KKR: Narine’s all-round brilliance powers KKR to swift victory

Sunil Narine's brilliant spell of 3/13 with the ball and his explosive 44 off 18 balls with the bat orchestrated a comprehensive and memorable victory for KKR.

The MA Chidambaram Stadium, often a fortress for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), witnessed a dominant display of power and precision tonight as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emphatically defeated the home side by eight wickets. This commanding victory inflicted further misery on CSK, marking a disappointing return to captaincy for MS Dhoni and extending their unprecedented losing streak.

Having won the toss and opted to field, KKR made a strategic change, bringing in Moeen Ali in place of Spencer Johnson. CSK, seeking a change in fortune, introduced Rahul Tripathi and Anshul Kamboj. However, these alterations failed to ignite the CSK batting order, which crumbled under the relentless pressure exerted by the KKR bowlers.

The CSK innings never gained momentum, sputtering from the very beginning. Their powerplay score of a meagre 31/2 was the second-lowest this season. KKR’s spin duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy expertly choked the CSK batsmen, restricting their scoring opportunities. The dismissal of Vijay Shankar triggered a dramatic collapse, with wickets falling in quick succession. CSK slumped from a precarious 59/2 to a disastrous 75/8, leaving the home crowd stunned. Such was their desperation that the team management even contemplated utilizing their impact substitute as a batter early in the innings. A late, gritty resistance from Kamboj, who allowed Shivam Dube to hit a couple of boundaries in the final over, only managed to push CSK to a paltry total of 103/9. This score now stands as the second-lowest ever recorded at the Chepauk and the lowest-ever total for CSK at their beloved home ground, a new nadir in their storied IPL history.

Narine was the architect of CSK’s downfall with the ball, delivering a mesmerizing spell of three wickets for a mere 13 runs. He found excellent support from Harshit Rana and Chakravarthy, who each scalped two crucial wickets. Vaibhav Arora and Moeen also contributed with a wicket apiece, showcasing a cohesive and disciplined bowling performance from the Knight Riders.

In stark contrast, KKR’s chase was a masterclass in aggressive yet controlled batting. The explosive opening pair of Quinton de Kock and Narine came out with intent, unleashing a blistering assault that yielded 71 runs for the loss of just one wicket in the powerplay – KKR’s highest-ever powerplay score against CSK in the IPL. Narine was in sensational form, smashing a quickfire 44 off just 18 deliveries, including two boundaries and five towering sixes, effectively dismantling the CSK bowling attack and taking the game away from the hosts within the initial overs.

KKR chased down the modest target with remarkable ease and efficiency, reaching the required score with a staggering 59 balls to spare and eight wickets in hand. This victory marked the third-fastest chase of a 100-plus target in the history of the IPL, underlining the sheer dominance of the KKR batsmen on the night.

This defeat plunges the Super Kings to a new low in their illustrious IPL journey. For the first time in their history, they have now suffered five consecutive defeats. Adding salt to their wounds, this is also the first instance of CSK enduring three consecutive losses at their cherished Chepauk within a single season, a stark indication of their current struggles.

Unsurprisingly, Sunil Narine was deservedly awarded the Man of the Match for his exceptional all-round performance. His brilliant spell of 3/13 with the ball and his explosive 44 off 18 balls with the bat orchestrated a comprehensive and memorable victory for the Knight Riders. Tonight belonged unequivocally to KKR, who proved to be far too formidable for a struggling Chennai Super Kings side on their turf.

Scorecard:

Chennai Super Kings: 103/9, Overs 20, Shivam Dube 31, Sunil Narine 3/13

Kolkata Knight Riders: 107-2, Overs 10.1, Sunil Narine 44, Noor Ahmad 1/8
