IPL 2024 Qualifier 1 KKR vs SRH: Both Iyers, Starc shine as KKR crush SRH; advance to the finals

With this result, KKR have made their way into the Finals, whereas SRH will get another opportunity in Qualifier 2, to advance to the Finals.

In the Qualifier 1 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

SRH won the toss and asked KKR to bowl first. The decision went awry as the Knights wiped up the southern side for 159 runs, falling about 15-20 runs short of par. Mitchell Starc had a brilliant spell at the start of the innings, which was then followed by Varun Chakaravarthy‘s and Harshit Rana’s economical performance in the middle overs. KKR kept on taking wickets, which didn’t let SRH advance much with the bat.

Chasing 160, KKR began their inning with some fireworks from their new opener, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (23) and Sunil Narine (21). Both batters added 44 runs in just 20 deliveries, which set the base for the forthcoming batters. The business was later taken ahead by both Iyers of the unit, as both of them smashed well-earned fifties. While Venkatesh Iyer (51*) played at a strike rate of 182.14, skipper Shreyas Iyer (58*) also played at a strike rate of 241.67. Together, both Iyers put up 97* runs together from just 44 balls, which helped the side reach the target in just 13.4 overs. Talking stats, the southpaw batter hit five fours and four sixes and from the other end, skipper Shreyas Iyer also smacked five fours and four sixes. Notably, the right-handed batter began quite slowly but later on took on bowlers to wind up the game quickly.

SRH lost four wickets upfront in the powerplay, which derailed their side from getting a good start. Rahul Tripathi (55) was the only batter to score a fifty, which consisted of seven fours and one six. The batter was looking in great touch but unfortunately got run out in the 14th over. Pat Cummins (30) also contributed valuable runs towards the end, which certainly put them in a decent position.

For the Knights with the ball, Starc rose to the occasion as he plucked three wickets. With him, Chakaravarthy scalped two wickets while Vaibhav Arora, Harshit Rana, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell also picked one wicket each.

Only two wickets were obtained by the Orange Army, from which one each was secured by Pat Cummins and T Natarajan.

Mitchell Starc was adjudged Player of the Match for his fiery bowling. With this result, KKR have made their way into the Finals, whereas SRH will get another opportunity in Qualifier 2, to advance to the Finals.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: 159/10, Overs 19.3, Rahul Tripathi 55, Mitchell Starc 3/34
