In the 59th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Gujarat Titans (GT) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 35 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
CSK won the toss and asked GT to bat first. The decision backfired, as the home side posted a massive score of 231/3 on the board. Both opening batters, Shubman Gill (104) and Sai Sudharsan (103), hammered thunderous centuries while adding up 210 runs together. The partnership also became the fourth-highest in IPL history. While Sudharsan struck five fours and seven sixes at a strike rate of 201.96, Gill also hit nine fours and six sixes at a strike rate of 189.09. Notably, both batters struggled in the end to middle the ball. Overall, the team only scored 41 in the last five overs. Nevertheless, the overall total of 231 became the second-highest team total by GT and the second-highest runs scored against CSK.
In the chase, the Super Kings lost three wickets in the first three overs itself. Daryl Mitchell (63) guided the chase with a valiant fifty but couldn’t bat till the end. The batter had a 109-run stand with Moeen Ali (56), who also smashed an impressive fifty. However, both lost their wickets in the span of three overs. The likes of Shivam Dube (21), Ravindra Jadeja (18) and MS Dhoni (26*) also scored runs but it was too late.
While defending, Mohit Sharma was at his best as he just conceded 31 runs and grabbed three wickets. Rashid Khan also plucked two wickets, while giving away 38 runs. Along with them, one wicket each was also taken by Umesh Yadav and Sandeep Warrier.
For CSK with the ball, Tushar Deshpande was the only bowler to take two wickets.
Shubman Gill was adjudged Player of the Match for his century. With this result, GT now have 10 points and are still in the hunt for a playoff spot.
