IPL 2023 RR vs SRH: Abdul Samad’s last over onslaught earns SRH two vital points

Following this win, SRH now have eight points but still rattles second from bottom.

In the 52nd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) by four wickets at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

RR won the toss and asked SRH to ball first. The visitors had a tough outing with the ball as they conceded above par score. While Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Marco Jansen bowled well, SRH required more from their bowlers.

Chasing 215, the Aiden Markram-led side commenced on a decent note with openers, Abhishek Sharma (55) and Anmolpreet Singh (33), scoring some valuable runs in the powerplay. After Singh was dismissed, SRH didn’t appear to submit as Rahul Tripathi (47) showcased his great form tonight as well. Both Tripathi and Sharma added 65 runs for the second wicket partnership. While Heinrich Klassen (26) also contributed runs in the middle overs, it was Glenn Phillips (25)’s match-winning knock that salvaged SRH from a difficult situation and once again gave them a chance to secure two points from this game. Phillips hammered one four and three consecutive sixes in seven deliveries which made sure SRH remain alive in the game. Towards the end, Abdul Samad (17*) hit match-winning runs to provide SRH two points. With five to get off the final ball, Samad hit straight to Jos Buttler at long-on only to realise, fortunately, it was a no ball. Now that he had four to get, Samad struck the ball cleanly this time for a maximum, making no errors.

In the first innings with the bat, both the openers got off to a strong start, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (35) hammering all the bowlers right from the word go. In just 18 deliveries, Jaiswal struck five fours and two sixes before getting out softly. On the other end, Buttler (95) started on a rough note with 20 runs off 20 balls. But then, Buttler changed gears and got lethal with the bat. In his inning, the Englishman smashed 10 fours and four sixes, however, he fell short of five runs from his well-deserved century. Captain Sanju Samson (66*) also joined the party and played some bold shots straightaway. The skipper hit four fours and five sixes to take RR to a gigantic total of 214 runs. Samson, along with Buttler, added 148 runs together for the second-wicket partnership.

Only two wickets were plucked by SRH. One each wicket was plucked by Jansen and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

For RR, Yuzvendra Chahal grabbed four wickets while defending. One wicket each was also picked up by Kudip Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Glenn Phillips was awarded Player of the Match award for his scintillating batting performance. Following this win, SRH now have eight points but still rattles second from bottom.
