IPL 2022: Royal Challengers Bangalore appoint Faf du Plessis as new captain

Virat Kohli stepped down from the RCB captainship after the second phase of IPL 2021.

One of the most popular franchises of the Indian Premier League (IPL) history, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), announced Faf du Plessis as their skipper ahead of the new season. The massive announcement was made at the RCB Unbox Event.

The former RCB captain, Virat Kohli took the mantle in 2013 and stepped down from the captainship after the second phase of IPL 2021. The 33-year-old cricketer will continue to play as a top-order batsman.

Faf du Plessis has been a consistent performer with the bat for his previous IPL team, Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In the last season, he was the second-highest run-scorer. The 37-year-old was also the South African captain for a fair amount of time. Among the likes of Glenn Maxwell and Dinesh Karthik, Faf was the favourite to lead the side in the highly anticipated IPL 2022.

In the IPL 2022 retention last year, the Bangalore-based franchise retained Virat Kohli (INR 15 crore), Glenn Maxwell (INR 11 crore) and Mohammed Siraj (INR 7 crore).

In the mega auction last month they managed to get players like Faf, Karthik, Josh Hazlewood and Wanindu Hasaranga on board.
