In the last match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 league stage, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will lock horns with Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Sunday, May 22 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai at 7:30 PM IST.
After letting go of their prime players before the auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad still looked good in the season and at one point were also one of the contenders for booking a place in the playoffs. After losing the first two games, the 2016 champions were on a five-match winning streak. The likes of Umran Malik, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Tripathi and Abhishek Sharma stood up and beat some of the in-form teams of the edition. But the one-time champion couldn’t sustain the momentum and they lost five fixtures in a row. SRH had a season of extreme highs and lows which couldn’t allow them to qualify. The Hyderabad-based franchise has acquired the eighth position with 12 points at the moment. A victory on Sunday will help them occupy the sixth spot.
On the other hand, Punjab Kings had a star-studded team as compared to their squad from the previous few years. With players like Shikhar Dhawan, Liam Livingstone, Mayank Agarwal, Jonny Bairstow and Kagiso Rabada, PBKS seemed a strong team on the paper. The 2014 runner-up couldn’t capitalise on the resources they had and failed to qualify. After playing 13 games, the Punjab-based franchise won six games and lost seven. The Agarwal-led team will look to conclude the season on a higher note with a victory in their last league stage game. PBKS are currently at the seventh spot with 12 points.
Head-to-head:
SRH have an upper hand in the head-to-head competition between the two units. The two teams collided on 18 occasions, Hyderabad won 13 matches while Punjab emerged victorious on five instances.
In the last outing between the two teams, which took earlier this season, SRH won the game by seven wickets.
