The El Classico of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will take place for the second time in the ongoing season when Mumbai Indians (MI) take on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, May 12 at 7:30 PM IST.
After registering their first two victories of the season in two consecutive games, Mumbai Indians seemed to be on track until they fumbled against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In an underwhelming season, the absence of the team’s star batsman Suryakumar Yadav due to an injury will be a major dent moving forward. After Rohit Sharma‘s controversial departure, the batting order of the team collapsed yet again mid-way into the chase, in their last game. With a struggling middle-order, runs from the blades of Rohit, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Verma are vital. With four points, MI have acquired the 10th spot on the leaderboard.
On the other end, there has been a twist in the fate of the defending champions after Mahendra Singh Dhoni took the charge of the team. Two of the four victories of the team have come under the captaincy of MS Dhoni in the last three games. The four-time IPL champions will step onto the field on Thursday on the back of a massive 91-run victory against Delhi Capitals (DC). Chennai Super Kings, just like their next opponent, have had a below-par tournament and would like to finish the season on a positive note by winning the upcoming three games. CSK have registered eight points, due to which they have occupied the ninth spot.
MI have the upper hand in the head-to-head competition. The two franchises took on each other on 33 occasions, Mumbai won 19 games while Chennai came on top on 14 instances.
The latest fixture between the two teams took place earlier this season where MSD’s finishing skills helped CSK to win by three wickets.
