IPL 2022: BCCI shortlists six cities for two new franchises

BCCI is looking towards the north region for the host cities keeping in mind the popularity of cricket in those regions.

With the confirmation of IPL 2022 having ten teams instead of the usual eight, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly selected six cities that will host the two new franchises from IPL 2022.

The six shortlisted cities are reported to be Guwahati, Ranchi, Cuttack, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, and Dharamsala. It has also been reported that Ahmedabad is the number contender for one of the franchises along with Guwahati or Lucknow could be the second franchise.

BCCI is also looking towards the north region for the host cities keeping in mind the popularity of cricket in those regions. Star Sports reports that 65 per cent of the total viewership comes from the northern Hindi-speaking regions due to which the BCCI is leaning towards the northern region.

BCCI also expects about Rs.5000 crore for the two new franchises.

A BCCI official said, “The BCCI is expecting anything in the range of 5000 crores if not more. There will be 74 IPL games next season and it’s a win-win situation for everyone. IPL teams are a great investment and have given the initial investors great returns. We don’t think the base price of 2,000 Cr is too much and we expect to get 3000-3500 Cr per team”

Phase 2 of IPL is all set to begin from 19th September, the players have started landing in the UAE to play the second part of the competition.

The first match of the rescheduled IPL will see Chennai Super Kings play against Mumbai Indians on 19th September.
