IPL 2022: Aramco bags title sponsorship rights of Orange and Purple Caps

For the first time in the competition's history, the Purple Cap and Orange Cap would have sponsors.

The Saudi oil company, Aramco has announced that they have acquired rights to become the title sponsor of Orange and Purple Caps ahead of the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). 

For the first time in the competition’s history, the Purple Cap and Orange Cap would have sponsors.

Saudi Aramco is a public Saudi Arabian petroleum and natural gas company headquartered in Dhahran. With over 270 billion barrels of proven crude oil reserves, Saudi Aramco has the world’s second-largest proven crude oil reserves, as well as the world’s highest daily oil production of any oil-producing company.

Recently, Aramco has also signed a multi-year agreement with the Formula 1 team, Aston Martin

The IPL Purple Cap is awarded to the bowler who takes the most wickets during a season of the IPL. Since the tournament’s inception, the award has been a part of it. Sohail Tanvir of Pakistan was the first bowler to be awarded the Purple Cap. In 11 games, he took 22 wickets in 2008. Last year, Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) Harshal Patel won the award. 

On the other hand, the leading run-scorer receives the Orange Cap. During the IPL season, the batter with the most runs in the tournament receives the Orange Cap. Shaun Marsh won the Orange Cap in the inaugural season of the IPL. In the 2021 edition, Ruturaj Gaikwad won the award. 

The 15th edition of IPL will kick off on March 26. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will square off in the first game at the Wankhede Stadium.

The IPL 2022 will feature 74 matches, including the playoffs and final. During the league stage, each team will play 14 games. The tournament will conclude on May 29.
