IPL 2021: Shubman Gill looking to improve in powerplay overs

After a mixed winter with the Indian cricket team, Shubman Gill is completely focused on improving his game during IPL 2021. The elegant top-order batsman is looking to build upon last season to provide a better start to Kolkata Knight Riders. He managed to solidify his place in KKR’s best XI by delivering good performances as an opener in IPL 2020.

Despite his good performances at the top of the order, KKR often struggled with the scoring rate in the powerplay overs. While talking to Times of India, Gill admitted that powerplay overs is the area KKR is looking to improve this year and they have plans set to capitalize on the fielding restrictions.

“I think last year we didn’t have many great powerplay. But, hopefully, this time it is going to be different. We have a set gameplan and I am sure it will be a lot better than last year.”

In a disappointed IPL 2020 for KKR, Shubman Gill was the rare shining light. Even though KKR failed to reach the knockout stage of the tournament, Gill scored 440 runs in 14 innings. He managed to score three half-centuries in IPL 2020, but the strike rate does have room for improvement. Gill’s strike rate in IPL 2020 was at 117.96.

Gill made a terrific debut for the Indian team in Australia. In the memorable victory at Gabba, Gill scored 91 runs at a healthy strike to set up the game for India. However, the home series against England was less productive. Gill also didn’t get a chance to bat for India during the ODI series against England, so he will be eager to perform well in IPL 2021.

KKR bring in Gurkeerat Singh Mann for Rinku Singh

Kolkata Knight Riders made a last-minute change to the squad over the weekend. They brought in Gurkeerat Singh Mann as a replacement for Rinku Singh. The lower-order batsman is set to miss the entire IPL 2021 due to a knee injury. Mann’s last IPL stint came with Royal Challengers Bangalore.

After failing to qualify for the playoffs last season KKR will be looking to at least make it to knockouts this season. They will begin the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad in MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on April 11.
