IPL 2021: Punjab Kings looking for fast start

Punjab Kings is currently preparing for IPL 2021 in Mumbai. After a complete overhaul in name, jersey, and squad, Kings are looking to have a stronger start to the season. It was last season’s poor start that eventually cost them a place in the playoffs despite a good run of victories in the second half of the season.

Ahead of the start of the new season, Fielding coach Jonty Rhodes told Times of India that Punjab Kings’ first goal is to get off to a flier. The former South African batsman believes that winning the first three games will set the momentum for the tournament.

“In T-20 cricket, it’s important to get a good start in the opening three games and not worry about making the playoffs. One game at a time is our target.”

Punjab eventually ended up in the sixth position with 12 points, two points behind fourth-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore. The margins are very fine, so a good start to the tournament should be a priority for Punjab Kings. By the end of the league stage, fatigue creeps in and there is a dip in performance levels of players.

RCB had a fast start to the last season. Eventually, performances in the final games of group stages tailed out. However, a good start was enough for them to make it to the playoffs. The first target for Punjab will be to qualify for the knockout rounds. After reaching there, they can think about winning the maiden title.

Jaffer backs KL Rahul to be an aggressive batsman in IPL 2021

KL Rahul has been scoring tons of runs for Punjab in the last three seasons. However, his strike rate has dropped considerably every year. He was the top scorer for Punjab last season, but his scoring rate in middle overs was concerning.

While talking to media this week, Punjab coach Wasim Jaffer confirmed that Rahul will be much more attacking batsman this season. If Jaffer’s words turn out to be true, then India will benefit from Rahul’s approach in IPL 2021. They need him to fire this season to go into the T-20 World Cup in the best possible form. Rahul will begin his season against Rajasthan Royals on April 12 in Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
