IPL 2021: MS Dhoni to become the first IPL player to earn Rs 150 crores through salary

MS Dhoni is all set to create a new record in Indian Premier League 2021 as he is set to become the first player in the league history to earn more than Rs 150 crores through salary alone. According to an analysis by InsideSport Moneyball, as soon as Dhoni gets his salary of Rs 15 crores for the 14th edition of the league, he will reach the glorious mark of Rs 152 crores.

The wicket-keeper batsman joined Chennai Super Kings in 2008’s inaugural IPL auction for Rs 6 crores, which made him the most expensive player that year. His salary kept increasing in the subsequent years till 2017. Since then, his contract has been fixed at Rs. 15 crores and is expected to stay the same in 2021 as well.

By the end of IPL 2020, MS Dhoni was the highest earner in the IPL with total earnings of Rs 137 crore from CSK and Rising Pune Supergiants. With CSK retaining his services, this total will now cross the 150 crore mark.

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is the next highest-paid cricketer in the league. With a fixed salary of Rs 15 crores just like Dhoni, his total salaried earnings from the league will reach Rs 146 crores in the upcoming season. Sharma is followed by RCB captain Virat Kohli, who will reach the mark of Rs. 143 crores. Kohli still leads the chart of top IPL salaries with Rs 17 crores.

Dhoni retired from international last year, so his sole focus will be on the IPL. Provided he keeps good fitness as he has done over the years, Dhoni is likely to have at least two more years in him. His presence in IPL also helps in boosting the brand of the tournament. Dhoni’s earnings are going to get even better if he keeps playing in the tournament as he remains marquee player for CSK.

IPL teams have started working for the next season as retention list was released at the end of January. Before the 14th edition of IPL begins in April 2021, the highly-anticipated mega auction for the season will be held on February 18 in Chennai.
