IPL 2021: Kl Rahul could miss the rest of the tournament

On Sunday, further misery was added to Punjab Kings season after they lost the game against Delhi Capitals along with losing their captain KL Rahul for the rest of IPL 2021 due to acute appendicitis.

Punjab Kings officially announced that the KL Rahul complained about abdominal pain and he provided with the medication. However, the Indian opener will have to undergo surgery to sort this issue. The surgery is not severe but the recovery takes about almost 6 weeks which officially rules KL Rahul out of the remainder of the tournament.

This is a big blow to the Punjab Kings as they were already struggling to score runs and now losing their most consistent batsmen does not help the situation. Mayank Aggarwal captained the side against Delhi Capitals on Sunday, so he is likely to lead the team for the rest of IPL 2021.

Rahul’s absence from the squad has dented hopes of Playoffs for the Punjab Kings. They find themselves sitting in the penultimate position on the points table, having played an extra game than most of the teams. Rahul has been wearing the orange cap for scoring most runs in IPL 2021 until Sunday, so it is a massive blow for Punjab.

Rahul not being there with the squad in yesterday’s loss against Delhi was felt as no other player than Mayank Agarwal stepped up against Delhi Capitals. Even T-20 specialist David Malan who was brought in for out-of-form Nicholas Pooran failed to impress. Other Indian batsmen also failed to come up with good scores to give Agarwal an ample amount of support from the other end.

Punjab Kings have to now win all of their remaining games without their captain in order to have any chance of qualifying for the knockout round. The tall task begins with their game against Royal Challengers of Bangalore on May 6.
