With less than 50 days to go for the Tokyo Games, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has officially unveiled their new kit with Li Ning for the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Olympic bound athletes such as wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Ravi Kumar, Deepak Punia, Sumit, Seema Bisla, and javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra were present for the unveiling ceremony, along with Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, IOA President Narinder Dhruv Batra, and Secretary General Rajeev Mehta.
The official kits are sponsored by Li Ning, while the official ceremonial kits are sponsored by Raymond. Li-Ning will supply the sports attire, including the travel and playing kits for the athletes heading to Tokyo. The design of the official sports kit is inspired by India’s national colours and integrated unique graphics to emote the energy and pride of the Indian Olympic Team.
IOA signed a deal with Li-Ning in May 2018 till the Tokyo Olympics. As per this agreement the company would sponsor training apparel, leisurewear, and footwear to the Indian contingent, including officials, for the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, the 2018 Olympic Youth Games, and the Tokyo Olympics. The total value of the deal is estimated to be between Rs 5-6 crore.
So far, 100 athletes have qualified for the Tokyo Games, including 56 men and 44 women. The Indian Olympic Association expects another 25 to 35 to qualify for the Games, which starts from July 23.
Athletes from 11 sports disciples including boxing, hockey, wrestling, yachting, athletics, archery, equestrian, fencing, rowing, shooting, and table tennis have qualified, with athletes from more disciplines expected to qualify too. The vaccination program of the Athletes is underway and the IOA says it is confident that it will vaccinate the players before they leave for the games next month. Tokyo Olympics continues to face opposition as 10000 volunteers reportedly leave due to the increase in COVID cases in Japan. International Olympics Committee remains confident about hosting games without any hassle.
