India vs New Zealand 2022 1st ODI: Latham, Williamson onslaught helps Kiwis acquire lead

With this win, the Kiwis have taken a lead by 1-0 in a three-match ODI series.

In the first ODI match of the India tour of New Zealand 2022, New Zealand beat India by seven wickets at Eden Park in Auckland.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to field first. At first, it appeared that the decision had backfired, as the Men in Blue went on a rampage with the willow in hand. Following that, the Blackcaps made a comeback in the innings thanks to some outstanding bowling from Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee. Matt Henry was also economical, which aided the Kiwis in not giving up too many runs towards the end of the first innings.

While chasing 307 runs, both the openers, Finn Allen (22) and Devon Conway (24), got a decent start but couldn’t take it much further. It was Kane Williamson’s (94) amazing knock which placed Kiwis well in the chase. With seven fours and one six, the New Zealand skipper played throughout the inning which ensured their win. Along with him, Tom Latham (145) also batted aggressively which helped Kiwis chase the target in just 47.1 overs. The southpaw smashed 19 fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 139.42, which also provided Williamson to play his natural game. Both the batters scored 212 runs together for the fourth wicket partnership.

In the first innings, both the opening batters, Shikhar Dhawan (72) and Shubman Gill (50) gave a positive start for the Men in Blue. The duo posted 124 runs for the first wicket partnership. Shreyas Iyer (80) batted well at number three to give India important runs in the middle overs. Following his departure, Team India continued to lose wickets and eventually just scored some decent runs in the death overs. The score, which was once expected to exceed 350, was reduced to 306/7 in 50 overs.

While bowling in the first innings, Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson bagged three wickets each. With them, Adam Milne also got one wicket.

For India, every bowler got belted for runs but it was Umran Malik who also provided some wickets. In his quota, Malik scalped two wickets. Along with him, Shardul Thakur also managed to pick one.

Tom Latham was adjudged Man of the Match for his wonderful knock. With this win, the Kiwis have taken a lead by 1-0 in a three-match ODI series.
