IIS becomes first Asian high-performance centre to deploy Feldspar smart track

JSW Sports and the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS) have entered into a long-term strategic partnership with UK-based sports technology company Feldspar Group Holdings Limited, a collaboration that aims to transform athlete performance monitoring and sports science capabilities in India.

Under the agreement, IIS will become the first high-performance sporting institution in Asia to deploy Feldspar’s sensor-embedded Smart Surface technology, bringing laboratory-grade biomechanical analysis directly into the daily training environment.

The partnership will begin with the installation of a 45-metre Smart Surface Track at the IIS High Performance Centre in Karnataka. The track features embedded sensors capable of capturing real-time performance data, including ground reaction force, power output, acceleration, speed, stride length, stride frequency and reaction times.

The technology is designed to provide athletes, coaches and sports scientists with instant access to detailed movement analytics, enabling more informed training decisions, improved injury prevention strategies and enhanced athlete development pathways.

Founded and operated by JSW Sports, IIS has emerged as one of India’s leading high-performance centres, supporting Olympic and elite athletes across disciplines including athletics, boxing, wrestling, judo and swimming through integrated coaching, sports science and rehabilitation programmes.

According to Feldspar, the track surface delivers up to 20 per cent greater energy return than the track used at the Paris Olympics, while simultaneously generating a comprehensive stream of performance data. The system has been designed to be modular, portable and scalable, with the capability to meet World Athletics certification standards.

For IIS, the partnership represents a significant enhancement of its sports science infrastructure. Athletes will gain access to deeper insights into stride mechanics, fatigue and recovery, while coaches will be able to continuously monitor performance trends and training loads through real-time feedback.

Beyond the initial installation, the partners plan to explore additional smart-surface deployments across India’s athletics ecosystem. A key objective is the creation of India’s first integrated athletics movement database, which could support AI-driven performance analysis and talent development at scale.

The technology is also expected to have applications beyond athletics, with potential use cases across cricket, football, hockey, boxing and kabaddi, offering coaches and performance staff new tools to manage workload, reduce injury risk and optimise athlete performance.

The partnership reflects the growing convergence of sports science, data analytics and technology as India seeks to strengthen its high-performance sporting ecosystem and improve its competitiveness on the global stage.
