In another thrilling Super 8 clash (Match 48) of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, India defeated Zimbabwe by 72 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Zimbabwe won the toss and asked the home team to bat first. Making his comeback into the XI, Sanju Samson (24) got things going early in the powerplay. From the other end, Abhishek Sharma (55) led the attack with a flawless fifty, marking a remarkable return to form. The Men in Blue scored 80 runs in the first six overs, instantly putting Zimbabwe under pressure. Ishan Kishan (38) and Suryakumar Yadav (33) kept the tempo up in the middle overs, ensuring no slowdown despite wickets dropping at regular intervals. However, the true catastrophe occurred in the death overs. Hardik Pandya (50) and Tilak Varma (44) put on a scorching 84-run unbeaten partnership in only 31 deliveries, tearing Zimbabwe’s attack apart. Tilak’s strike rate of 275 in the closing overs demonstrated India’s merciless finishing, putting the score firmly out of reach. India put on an impressive batting show, scoring 256/4 in 20 overs.

Zimbabwe displayed grit in chasing a challenging 257 but ultimately fell short, ending at 184/6 in 20 overs. Brian Bennett (97*) was the main player, hitting eight fours and six sixes in an incredible unbroken knock. Bennett held the innings together from one end, sustaining the pursuit despite losing wickets at regular intervals. Zimbabwe made a good start, reaching 44 in the powerplay, but failed to maintain its pace. Tadiwanashe Marumani (20) and Dion Myers failed to convert their beginnings, although skipper Sikandar Raza (31) provided some optimism with a quickfire knock.

India’s bowling team performed admirably, defending the big score with relative ease. Arshdeep Singh was the standout of the bowlers, taking 3/24 in four overs, including two key wickets in the death overs. His spell effectively destroyed the chase’s backbone. Axar Patel and Varun Chakaravarthy each took a wicket, helping to retain control in the middle overs. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya were economical, surrendering only 21 runs each in their three-over periods. Although Shivam Dube had a painful performance, giving up 46 runs in two overs, India’s overall bowling discipline meant Zimbabwe never really threatened the 256-run total.

Zimbabwe had a rough day with the ball, as none of the bowlers could handle India’s aggressive approach. Richard Ngarava (1/62) and Blessing Muzarabani (1/43) both took one wicket but surrendered substantially, particularly in the dying overs. Captain Sikandar Raza (1/29) was the most economical of the frontline bowlers, temporarily halting the scoring rate in the middle overs. Zimbabwe allowed almost 80 runs in the final five overs, wiping out any prospect of limiting the total to a realistic target.

With this victory, India’s semi-final hopes remain alive, and a win against West Indies in their next outing will seal qualification.

Scorecard:

India: 256/4, Overs 20, Abhishek Sharma 55, Sikandar Raza 1/29

Zimbabwe: 184/6, Overs 20, Brian Bennett 97*, Arshdeep Singh 3/24
