In an evening soaked in rivalry and roaring excitement, Match 27 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 produced another unforgettable chapter as defending champions India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by 61 runs at Colombo’s iconic R. Premadasa Stadium. Under the floodlights, with over 50 crores watching intently, India rose to the occasion, transforming pressure into control and producing a dominant victory over the Men in Green in this high-voltage clash.
Not to forget, another ICC encounter after weeks of off-field hungama, unending build-up, and sky-high expectation, it followed a predictable script.
Pakistan won the toss and asked the Men in Blue to bat first. India lost in-form Abhishek Sharma for a duck, but Ishan Kishan (77) was the standout of the evening. India made a competitive 175/7 in 20 overs, aided by a blistering hit from the wicketkeeper-batsman. Kishan set the tone early, hitting 10 fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 192.50, ensuring India profited on their powerplay. Tilak Varma (25) on the other end complimented him nicely, stitching 87 runs together to stabilise the innings while keeping the scoreboard ticking. However, the middle overs showed a minor slowdown. Following Kishan’s dismissal, Tilak and Suryakumar Yadav (32) were unable to completely accelerate against Pakistan’s spin stranglehold, allowing the opposition to recover. A sudden collapse, with three wickets falling between overs 14 and 15, interrupted momentum. Shivam Dube‘s (27) quickfire hits provided late momentum, while Rinku Singh‘s (11*) explosive knock ensured India ended firmly with a solid run rate of 8.75. Despite ending strongly, India may believe they left 10-15 runs on the table after being comfortably placed at 126/2.
Chasing 176, Pakistan collapsed under pressure and were bowled out for 114 in 18 overs, giving India a dominant win. Pakistan were reeling at 13/3 after two overs, thanks to strikes from Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya. Usman Khan’s (44) fighting knock gave temporary resistance, securing a 39-run partnership to keep the innings going, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Babar Azam and “slogger” Salman Agha couldn’t convert starts, as the middle order battled to resist India’s spin choke. Shaheen Afridi‘s (23*) outing contributed some late runs, but the target was constantly sliding away.
India’s bowlers produced a clinical, all-round effort. Hardik set the tone with 2/16 in three overs, delivering at the beginning and end. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed two vital top-order batsmen early, putting Pakistan on the back foot. The spin trio then tightened the knot; Axar Patel (2/29), Varun Chakravarthy (2/17), and Kuldeep Yadav (1/14) utilised the turning surface effectively, sharing five wickets and shredding the middle order.
Even part-timer Tilak contributed with a wicket, highlighting India’s supremacy throughout departments. The disciplined bowling performance meant that Pakistan never posed a real threat, resulting in a resounding victory.
On the other hand, Pakistan maintained discipline while bowling to keep India under 180 after a poor start. Saim Ayub stood out with 3/25 in four overs, which proved crucial. Usman Tariq also performed admirably with 1/24 in his quota, retaining control during the death overs. Skipper Agha kept things close with a wicket.
For his scintillating batting show, Ishan Kishan was named Player of the Match.
With this win, India bolstered their march to the Super 8 stage.
