India wrapped up their group-stage campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a 17-run win over the Netherlands in Match 36 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Yet this was not just about two points. It was about preparation.

With a Super 8 clash against South Africa at the same venue approaching, India treated the fixture as both competition and rehearsal.

After winning the toss, India chose to bat. Arshdeep Singh came in for Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel was rested, and Washington Sundar was drafted into the XI, while the Netherlands replaced Fred Klaassen with Noah Croes.

India’s start was unsettled. Abhishek Sharma’s struggles continued as he fell for a third consecutive duck in the opening over. Aryan Dutt then removed Ishan Kishan for 18, ensuring India did not dominate the powerplay. At 51 for 2 after six overs, the innings was stable but lacked authority.

Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav attempted to rebuild, adding 41 runs for the third wicket. The stand ended when 41-year-old Roelof van der Merwe produced a sharp catch to dismiss Tilak. Suryakumar looked fluent but fell while trying to accelerate, leaving India in need of a decisive push.

Shivam Dube provided it.

The all-rounder shifted momentum with controlled aggression, reaching his half-century in just 25 balls. Alongside Hardik Pandya, he forged a rapid 50-run partnership that lifted India through the middle overs. Pandya also crossed the 6,000-run mark in T20 cricket during his knock. India closed on 193 for 6, a total that appeared slightly above par on a surface offering occasional grip.

Aryan Dutt impressed with figures of 2 for 19, while Bas de Leede was economical. However, the Dutch attack struggled to contain India in the final overs.

At the toss, India had outlined their intent. With dew expected later in the evening, the focus was on exposing bowlers to challenging conditions ahead of the Super 8. This was calculated experimentation, a chance to test combinations under stress rather than simply chase a comfortable win.

The Netherlands began cautiously against a disciplined new-ball spell from Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah. Pressure mounted quickly. Varun Chakravarthy bowled Max O’Dowd as he attempted to force the pace, and Hardik Pandya soon dismissed Michael Levitt.

Colin Ackermann briefly threatened to increase the scoring rate but fell to Chakravarthy in the deep. The leg-spinner struck again on the very next ball, removing Aryan Dutt and tightening India’s grip. At that stage, the Netherlands were tracking close to India’s position at a similar point in the innings, but the rising required rate made the difference.

Bas de Leede counterattacked for a brisk 33 before Dube claimed his wicket, completing a significant all-round contribution.

India’s strategic intent remained evident in the closing overs. Suryakumar Yadav entrusted the death overs to Dube and Pandya, deliberately giving them exposure under dew-heavy conditions rather than relying solely on specialist bowlers. It was a clear signal of confidence and forward planning.

Late cameos from Scott Edwards, Zach Lion-Cachet and Noah Croes kept the Netherlands competitive, but India held firm to seal a 17-run victory.

Dube was named Player of the Match for his explosive half-century and key breakthrough.

Now the tournament enters its decisive phase.

India move into the Super 8 stage, where margins shrink, and every result carries knockout implications. South Africa, Zimbabwe and the West Indies await. The group stage was about building rhythm. From here, it is about sustaining it under pressure.

Scorecard:

India: 193-6, Overs 20, Shivam Dube 66, Logan van Beek 3/56

Netherlands: 176/7, Overs 20, Bas de Leede 33, Varun Chakaravarthy 3/14
