On a momentous night for Indian cricket, India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the magnificent Narendra Modi Stadium. With their dominant victory, India made history as the first team to win the T20 World Cup at home and the first to win the trophy in consecutive editions.
Coming into the final as heavy favourites, the Men in Blue produced a performance that lived up to expectations. Under Suryakumar Yadav‘s leadership and the supervision of head coach Gautam Gambhir, India demonstrated a level of domination rarely seen in T20 cricket, outperforming New Zealand in all areas to earn a spectacular victory in front of a raucous home crowd.
The Kiwis won the toss and asked India to bat first. With no changes in the XI, the defending champions started strongly in the powerplay with Sanju Samson (89) once again being the top scorer, making the highest individual score by a batter in a T20 World Cup final. From the other end, Abhishek Sharma (52) saved his best for last, smashing the fastest fifty of the tournament off just 18 balls. Ishan Kishan (54) and Shivam Dube (26) also contributed significantly. The only unfortunate part of the innings was the 16th over of Jimmy Neesham, in which he picked up three wickets. It was the last over in which Dube smashed 24 runs to take India to a mammoth total of 255/5, the highest-ever total by a team in a T20 World Cup final. However, with India reaching 200 in 15 overs, the side in the end looked like some 15 runs behind overall.
New Zealand were all out for 159 in 19 overs, with wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert (52) leading their innings with an attacking performance that included two fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 200. Seifert and Finn Allen provided early fuel, but regular wickets kept the Kiwis from forming solid partnerships. The middle order featuring Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, and Mark Chapman tried their best but fell cheaply. Captain Mitchell Santner (43) sought to resuscitate the innings, while Daryl Mitchell (17) chipped in with a few runs, but New Zealand’s lack of consistent partnerships resulted in wickets falling at vital moments.
India bowled with discipline, led by Jasprit Bumrah‘s spectacular spell of 4/15 in four overs, which dismantled the lower middle order. Axar Patel contributed significantly with 3/27, removing renowned batters and providing pressure in the middle overs. Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Abhishek all took one wicket each as well. Although Arshdeep Singh and Pandya gave a couple boundaries early on, the bowlers overall maintained control through the middle and death overs, finally taking New Zealand out in 19 overs.
James Neesham was the top bowler of the evening for the Black Caps as he plucked three wickets. Apart from him, one wicket each was grabbed by Matt Henry and Rachin Ravindra.
For his exceptional bowling show, Bumrah was named player of the match. With this win, India have clinched their third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
