The hallowed grounds of Wimbledon are set to become even more electrifying for fans worldwide, as the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) and the long-standing technology partner, IBM, unveiled a suite of groundbreaking AI-powered digital experiences for The Championships, Wimbledon 2025.
Building on a formidable partnership spanning over 35 years, these advancements promise to deliver an unprecedented level of immersion and insight for tennis enthusiasts, leveraging IBM’s cutting-edge AI capabilities, including its powerful Watsonx platform.
Headlining the innovations for Wimbledon 2025 is the highly anticipated debut of “Match Chat,” an interactive AI assistant poised to redefine real-time engagement during ladies’ and gentlemen’s singles matches. Accessible through the official Wimbledon App and wimbledon.com, Match Chat empowers fans to delve deep into ongoing matches by asking specific questions. From granular statistics like “who has converted more break points in the match?” to more analytical queries such as “who is performing better in the match?”, the assistant provides instant, accurate, and contextually rich responses.
Built with technologies on Watsonx Orchestrate and harnessing the power of Large Language Models (LLMs) like IBM Granite, Match Chat has been meticulously trained on Wimbledon’s unique editorial style and the nuanced language of tennis. This ensures that every interaction feels authentic and truly insightful. Beyond live play, this dynamic assistant will also be available post-match within IBM Slamtracker for a selection of high-profile encounters, allowing fans to dissect key moments long after the final point.
Further enhancing the fan experience, the popular “Likelihood to Win” tool has undergone a significant upgrade. Previously offering static pre-match probabilities, the reimagined tool will now deliver dynamically updated win percentages throughout each game. This real-time reflection of match momentum, generated from a comprehensive AI-powered analysis of player statistics, expert opinion, and live match data, promises to spark even more engaging discussions and debates among the global tennis community. The tool leverages IBM technologies, including Red Hat OpenShift, guaranteeing swift and efficient delivery of these constantly evolving insights.
Usama Al-Qassab, Marketing & Commercial Director at the All England Club, expressed his enthusiasm for the new offerings and said, “We are committed to providing fans with the best possible Wimbledon experience, whether they interact with us through TV, radio, digitally or within the grounds. The innovations we have introduced in recent years, driven by generative AI, in conjunction with IBM, allow us to provide more exciting ways for our hundreds of millions of fans around the world to interact with The Championships. This year’s new features will encourage the Wimbledon audience to immerse themselves and engage with all the match action like never before.”
Jonathan Adashek, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications for IBM, added, “Solutions like Match Chat and Likelihood to Win shows how AI on Watsonx can deliver tennis fans the compelling real-time insight and match engagement they want around this historic tournament and its players. Our 35-year partnership with the All England Club is another example of how IBM helps clients unlock and achieve lasting value from their unique data using AI.”
